Notice to bidders for Ukiah Unified School District buses

Sealed bids for two 79 passenger school buses two 9 passenger station wagons one 2 door sedan and one tractor loader backhoe must be received by August 3 1971 at 5 p.m. at the Ukiah School District offices to be opened the same day at 8 p.m. Bids require a 10 percent bid bond and must meet California State Education and CHP standards. The district may reject any bid and reserves sole judgment on equipment suitability.

Motorcyclist Aids CHP After Four Horse Trailer Overturns

An unknown bicycle rider aided CHP on Highway 101 near Burke Hill when a four horse trailer overturned after a collision. Patrolmen say William Heldcorn, 69, Riverside, suffered minor to moderate injuries in the crash as the trailer separated from the truck. The cyclist entered the van, calmed and guided the skittish horses to safety, rescuing one horse that was injured slightly.

Covelo visitor cited for starting fire

John Edward Paxton of Solana Beach was cited by Division of Forestry officers for allowing a campfire to escape and burn one half acre of grass and brush. Paxton was camping at Cherry Creek on Covelo Road preparing pancakes over an open campfire built in grass without clearance. the fire spread rapidly and he could not control it. Fire crews from Laytonville and Howard Forest Stations brought it under control. Campfire escapes in Mendocino County have increased this year. The division urges extra care, proper clearances, and never leaving a fire unattended.

Brave Ukiah citizen aids stranded flyers in Eureka

In a letter from Eureka California, Elisworth R. Briggs commends Mort Rice, an engineer formerly in the Eureka county office, for lending his car and guiding stranded travelers to safety. A San Francisco fogbound flight left eight people awaiting transport, and Rice arranged an eight passenger van, refueled, and drove them home to Eureka by 2:45 a.m., then returned for his Rotary event.

Gear mishap at Ukiah airport involving Beechcraft Baron

Jere Starks of Sebastopol misfired during landing at Ukiah airport when he retracted the wing gear instead of flaps at 7 03. The right engine propeller dug into the runway and the right flaps were damaged as the plane taxied. A safety device would normally render gear inoperative but the aircraft’s motion drew up the right gear while the left remained down.

Ballet Girl film at Ukiah library summer story hour

Ukiah library hosts a Tuesday summer story hour in the children's room featuring Ballet Girl. The 10 year old Kirsten follows backstage visits to her first audience. Local artist Joy Oswell will demonstrate poster making for decorations displays and school room competitions. All children in grades 1 through 6 are invited from 2 to 3 p.m.

Two Escape From Konocti Honor Camp

Lake County law enforcement reports two inmates from Konocti honor camp missing after an 11 30 bed check. Authorities believe Arthur Fuentez a drugs offender, and John Kramer an auto theft and escape inmate, are now at large on foot and unarmed.

Medical tests for Marrufo brothers in Vacaville case

Harold John Marrufo 22 and Dale Douglas Marrufo 20, of Stuarts Point, were sentenced to 90 days in Vacaville for medical evaluation after appearing Friday in Superior Court. They had pleaded guilty to assault following temporary attempted murder bookings.

Petreys Face New Charges After Lake County Arrest

Dave Petrey and Cecil Petrey, brothers aged 19 and 26, were arrested at Willo Point Resort on new charges of assaulting a police officer. They already faced prior charges from an altercation with an officer and are held in Lake County jail pending arraignment.

John Shanyfelt dies at 77 rites Tuesday

John Earl Shanyfelt 77 of Ukiah died Saturday at a local hospital. Funeral services Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Zimmerman Mortuary with Reverend John Wagner officiating. Survived by wife Irene daughter Katherine Crane two brothers and his mother. Interment at Ukiah Veterans Cemetery. Pallbearers listed.
