Carter says no plan to appoint special prosecutor in Korean probe

President Carter, arriving at the White House from Camp David, says he has no plans to name a special prosecutor to probe South Korean influence buying on Capitol Hill. Republicans and 25 Democratic congressmen pressed for an independent inquiry amid the Ethics Committee investigation and resignation of chief counsel Philip Lacovara. ONeill Wright Flynt denied any pressure, calling the accusation a lie.

Grader ordered to reveal records on $15000 Mendelsohn donation

Fort Bragg businessman William Grader must produce documents by Wednesday 1 p.m. relating to a $15,000 contribution to Mendelsohn's 1974 state controller campaign and other transfers tied to Transcentury Properties, Skagit Trading, and Public Land Association amid FPPC subpoenas and court orders. The hearing, presided by Superior Judge Jack Golden, addressed contempt chances and access to records.

Ukiah Sees Year’s Hottest Weekend Heat Record

Ukiah posts the year’s hottest weekend with 105 degrees on Saturday at the city weather station and 104 on Friday. Sunday's 101 degree high follows, while overnight lows stay near 60. The National Weather Service forecasts fair skies and small temperature changes through Friday.

California Farmers Tackle Drought With Lower Loss Forecasts

Sacramento officials expect drought losses to drop to 500 to 800 million dollars from an April 1.2 billion estimate. Beef and dairy cattle incur the largest one year loss near 500 million, while dryland farming and higher costs shrink net farm income. Vegetables fruits nuts and grapes look good with bumper crops possible in almonds walnuts grapes peaches and tomatoes if weather cooperates. A shift to high priced commodities and 6 000 to 8 000 new irrigation wells drilled drive costs up though overall food production should remain steady.

Final Flight For Helicopter Crew Killed In North Korea

CDRs loaded on a C130 for a long trip home from Kimpo International Airport. The three Americans, killed after their CH47 helicopter was shot down near the DMZ, were honored at a 15 minute memorial service in Seoul with a 21 gun salute. One survivor, CWO Glenn Schwanke, was in good condition at a Seoul hospital.

Coast Guard Rescues Two Vessel Crews After Sinking Incidents

Drifting fishermen Don Foxx and Don Casillus were rescued by the Pt Heyer after their Novo based Odyssey sank near Goat Island following a rock collision. Foxx and Casillus, both minorly exposed, reported faulty compass and fathometer contributed to the stranding. A Coast Guard helicopter and local agencies aided in the search.

Willits Youth Dies In Head On Crash

A 17 year old Willits boy died Sunday in a head on collision on a left hand drive logging road north of Fort Bragg. He rode a motorcycle with an unidentified rider traveling southbound at about 55 mph when they entered a curve and struck a vehicle. The victim’s name awaits next of kin notification.
