Secret Cambodian air strikes revealed before 1970

Defense Secretary James R. Schlesinger told the Senate Armed Services Committee that B52 raids into Cambodia were authorized prior to public disclosures in May 1970. He noted large U.S. force levels in Vietnam at the time and said strict security protected operations. Former Air Force Maj. Hal Knight testified he burned documents to hide the strikes, saying he was told not to question authorization.

Local 980 rejects Masonite pay offer

Local 980 votes down Masonite’s wage proposal and benefits package. About 85.6 percent of nearly 300 workers authorize a strike if demands aren’t met, with a 10 day cooling off deadline and 10 day strike notice required. Masonite favors a three year deal with 22 21 and 24 cent raises, union seeks other terms and a one year contract. Washington reports Congress preparing to urge Nixon on troop decision powers, veto likely.

Residents oppose Mendocino Aggregates gravel plan in Outlet Creek

A group of 12 Outlet Creek residents criticize the California Regional Water Quality Control Board for approving Mendocino Aggregates gravel operations. They allege environmental damage from rock crushing, creek bed devastation, truck wear on Covelo Road, and waste discharge. They seek a public hearing and local remedies to protect Outlet Creek and the Eel River.

Accidents injure four in county

Four people suffered injuries in four weekend accidents across Mendocino County. Howard Wenz 22 of Mountain View crashed into a parked Frank Norton vehicle at 4 30 a m on Highway 101 in Hopland causing a fire and pole damage. Robin Roscoe 21 was treated for minor injuries at Ukiah General Hospital.

Phase IV plan to be revealed this week by White House

UPI reports the Nixon administration will unveil Phase IV of economic controls later in the week and Shultz says Nixon’s illness keeps him from televised remarks. Final options will be reviewed bedside at Bethesda as wage and price rules shift from the June 13 freeze with strict COLC prereviews for big firms.

Kalmbach says No. 2 and No. 3 White House staff directed funds

Herbert W. Kalmbach testified to Senate Watergate hearings that he raised money for the original seven Watergate defendants on orders from senior White House aides Ehrlichman and Haldeman. He denied wrongdoing, described duties for Nixon and his family, and said he acted to honor a moral obligation while facing dismissal after paying a lawyer linked to campaign sabotage.

Pear price offer gets thumbs down in California canner talks

California canners reject the initial 115 dollar per ton offer for No 1 Bartlett pears by the California Canning Pear Association. Association manager Cameron Girton cites cost pass through uncertainties from Phases 3 and 4 of federal programs and notes the offer is only a minimal rise over 1972 prices. A second offer is due tomorrow as crop forecasts show Mendocino Lake crops up sharply statewide 330000 tons.
