Coast Guard opened an inquiry into the Lehi raft voyage ending with rescue near San Francisco. Captain Earl Swan of the Metapan reported the crew of five, aboard the 32 foot raft, shivering after a six day journey 200 miles south of the California coast.

Four Fort Bragg youths charged with assaulting an officer and resisting arrest were found guilty as charged after an all day deliberation by a six man, six woman jury. Sentences were set for July 23 for Charles Ciapusei, 22, William Evans, 28, Dink Hakill, 25, and Everett DePriest, 25. The group allegedly beat Deputy Sheriff Russell Tolman at the Track Inn on May 25 amid a riot call. Defense was by Frank Petersen, Joseph Murphy and William Farrell. prosecuting was Merle P. Orchard.
County Board of Supervisors yesterday accepted the low bid of 14317 to build a 50 foot long 26 foot wide concrete bridge on Potter Valley road. Ken Whited Construction Company of Oakland will conduct the work, with only one other bid of 21906.50 from D At Forde of San Enselmo. Construction starts next week and bids to reconstruct a bridge on Ort Bragg road two miles west of Willits are to be opened at 2 p m August 16.
Senate leader Knowland blocked McCarthy plan to hold hearings in Boston on alleged Communists in defense plants. Boston hearings will be moved to Washington next Tuesday. some witnesses will testify there. Potter vows to press staff firings as McClellan campaigns for reelection in Arkansas.
Ed Paulson former district manager for General Motors Acceptance Corporation drowned while fishing in Idaho. He was about 35, lived in Salt Lake City with a San Francisco based credit supervisor role, and was vacationing with his brother when their boat overturned. His wife and two children relocated to San Francisco.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee urged the United States not to abandon its anti Communist Southeast Asia alliance as Indochina fights pause. It backed a $712 million aid package for Southeast Asia and emphasized strengthening new nations militarily and economically. It called for trade outlets for Japan and noted NATO nations have built a defense force with defense of Europe in view.
Senate Republican leaders block Ralph Flanders from ousting Joseph McCarthy from key chairmanships. Flanders plans a floor vote to push the measure out of Rules. GOP Policy Committee votes to kill the move, signaling weak support for removing McCarthy.
Returned French prisoners, sick and wounded, claim nearly 500 defenders died after Dien Bien Phu fell. They say Brig. Gen Christian de Castries was taken to a Chinese frontier prison. The march north to Thanh Hoa lasted 41 days in heat, with many left to die.
Lon Gibson the sole survivor of five injured in the Clearlake Highlands gas plant blast remains on the critical list but showing some improvement at Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport. His wife Bess died from burns, and three others Irvin Garner and his son Donald Garner plus Charles Baum also perished.
A Senate House conference panel may finish a 1.3 billion dollar tax revision, but a few major issues could delay final passage. Key questions revolve around dividend income relief, aid for working widows and low income families, and treatment of foreign source corporate income. Orville Frost former Potter Valley resident dies of a heart attack on Thursday while returning from a fishing trip. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Fewel Mortuary Guerneyville with burial at the Chapel of the Chimes Santa Rosa. Frost was born in Willits, rancher and cattle raiser owning pear orchards, and had lived in Monte Rio for three years.
In Geneva France urged Britain to press the Soviet Union to accept a west proposed armistice for Indochina. Pierre Mendes-France and Anthony Eden pressed Molotov through a six hour dinner with Molotov reportedly unyielding on major points. The effort followed Dulles and Bedell Smith’s brief Paris trip and aimed to secure a July 20 peace with honor.
A Kent Manufacturing Co plant explosion in Chestertown Maryland killed at least 10 persons and left 12 missing. About 50 injured, many evacuated as fires raged and subterranean powder stores feared to explode. Rescue operations organized with aid from Marine Corps helicopters and regional fire crews.
Benjamin Murtaugh, who served as deputy sheriff from April 1 to October 31, 1953, sues the county for 549.50 in unpaid overtime. He earned 300 per month for five 8 hour days weekly with overtime at 1.75 per hour per a board order. The claim, filed May 7 and itemized, was rejected. Burke and Rawles of Ukiah represent him.
Sen Homer Ferguson called for quick congressional action to curb a "clear and present danger" of Communists in defense plants. A Defense Dept official said many subversives work for private firms on defense jobs, yet no authority exists to oust those not directly on classified tasks. The House Judiciary Committee tabled an administration bill to bar suspected subversives from defense plants. Defense leaders cited discharges and ongoing studies. authorities note limited legal power to remove risks in nonclassified roles within plants.
A proposed hearing on the county zoning ordinance will be held Monday at 2 pm in the courthouse chambers. The ordinance, under consideration for weeks, has been recommended by the County Planning Commission and the Chamber of Commerce, with a partial recommendation by the City Council.

In Sacramento, the Board of Equalization filed punitive charges against Charles E. Berry, Southern California district liquor control officer, for conduct incompatible with public service.
