State Division of Highways awarded the five mile plus project on Highway 101 from Smith Street to 1.3 miles south of Robinson Creek for 447,064 dollars. Granite Construction Company of Watsonville won the low bid of eight. Skri Construction was second at 448,349 dollars. Baldwin Construction will begin minor sewer and water work nearby to ready the site. A detailed progress schedule may be issued in about 20 days.
Edward Lee Robinson a 29 year old Fort Bragg resident was charged with incest in a complaint issued by the district attorney. Two daughters aged 8 and 10 of his common law wife were the alleged victims. Robinson worked at a Fort Bragg lumber mill.
In New York a last minute appeal by President Eisenhower led steel wage negotiators to resume talks today to avert a strike at midnight Tuesday. Union leader McDonald said no contract extension, strike deadline remains, and that settlement is possible if industry meets them halfway. Government mediation director De Kinnevan said the agency will not intervene now but may offer services later.
Pacific Gas and Electric plans a six week shutdown starting September 10 to rebuild the tunnel intake at Van Arsdale Reservoir and install an automatic trash rake. Potter Valley Irrigation District President Cedric Thornton and manager Herman W. Karbe say water releases will pause while maintenance at Scott Dam on Lake Pillsbury and power house work occur. August releases will be increased to carry over fields and pastures to the rainy season despite the outage.
Directors of Allied Grape Grow ers and United Vintners approve Allied purchase of United Vintners stock. Stock transfer awaits approval from Allied growers and United stockholders. District meetings across California will present the plan for final approval.
River Union elementary voters head to the polls from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to decide a second proposal to raise the basic district tax rate from 80 cents to 1.27 dollars. If rejected, the district will cut staff and may reshuffle classes with one teacher short and potential grade‑reorganization.
Lt Governor Glenn Anderson will be greeted by Miss Gull Evans, 1959 Miss Showcase, at Ukiah airport. Evans, a Chamber of Commerce model, will present a city key carved by Masonite and invite him to the Realwood Empire Fair and Sports Show opening August 27. Hosted by Blue Bonnet’s Norm Williamson and A. B. Broaddus, the event honors Anderson and Mrs. Anderson.
A Saturday night head on collision on Redwood highway 4.3 miles south of Laytonville left three dead and four injured. Vehicles were a southbound Ford wagon driven by Edward W. Rogers 79 of Rough and Ready California and a northbound Pontiac sedan driven by William Wilson 59 of Empire Oregon. Dead include Andrew W. Rogers and Ge neva Rogers and Florence Wilson 51. Injured include Linda Wilson 12 Patricia Johnson 2 Debra Johnson 20 months and William Wilson 59. Bodies at Anker Mortuary. Mrs Wilson to be buried in North Bend Oregon.
The Ukiah Fire Department weather observers record 108 degrees on Saturday following a 106 Friday. Coastal fog and inland drafts are expected to keep temperatures in the 80s and 90s today. The 108-degree day marks a historic peak, with July 11 a likely hot test, while July 24 1942 remains Ukiah’s hottest July day.
Stan Skaggs, a Bittenbender Lumber driver, became the first archer to bag a deer as the state opened the archery deer seasons. He downed a forked-horn buck near Laytonville with two arrows after stalking to within roughly 180 feet. The regular rifle deer season starts July 28 due to a dry spell.
Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan announced Mendocino County's Sheriff's Mounted Posse has tied articles with his office to form a non profit corporation. The group lists its members including Allen Toward Ukith GloR Farnsworth Potter Valleys Bynest Tlarris Redwood Valley.
Kenneth D Brower faced a battery and disrupting patrons charge after a disturbance in a downtown hotel lobby. His estranged wife Doreen Brower signed the complaint alleging loud threatening and profane language. Brower, said to be intoxicated, invaded the lobby about 530 am Friday and threatened his former wife. Officer Dick Borecky arrested him and he appeared before Judge Bred Goss.
A Sunday afternoon crash on the Redwood highway north of Hopland blamed on excessive speed involved a vehicle driven by Vere Aleta Johnson of Orinda and a Cadillac boat trailer driven by Melvin Garabaldi of Los Altos. Major damage occurred to the boat and trailer and to the Johnson car. Injured were Vera Johnson, Melvin Crombald, Rickie Garabaldi, and Melvin Garabaldi Jr. Mrs. Johnson declined medical help. others were taken to General hospital.
Sonoma County Fair launches in Santa Rosa July 16 to 25 with entries rising across exhibits reflecting county economy and culture. Entertainment includes bands and big time rodeo nights July 17 18 and 24 25 plus circus fireworks and free events except rodeo. Farmers Day July 19 features sheep dog trials riding events horse show and Barnyard Olympics for youngsters.
