Firefighting planes will be based at Ukiah airport
California Division of Forestry announced two air attack aircraft would operate from Ukiah starting today. State Forester L A Moran cited FAA permission for air attacks on north coast wildfires. Planes include a F7F Tigercat and a PBY Catalina. Conditions limit single engine tankers, wind-based departures, and routes. Opposition cited noise, crash risk, and slurry fallout. Firefighting operations aim for safety with minimal disruption while exploring alternatives.

Mitchell admits aiding Watergate cover up to aid Nixon
Former Attorney General John N Mitchell testified before the Senate Watergate committee that he helped hush the Watergate break in and kept information from President Nixon to protect the President’s reelection. He said keeping the lid on until after the election was the best course though he later called it possibly wrong. Mitchell rejected that Nixon knew of the cover up, saying his faith in the man and their discussions led him to withhold details. The testimony, after a 10 day recess, showed clashes with earlier witnesses, including Magruder and Dean, on what Nixon knew and when.
