Pastor Ken Hewitt plans to appear before the county board with hundreds of signatures to reverse a unanimous denial of a 10 acre School Way rezoning from AC to RE for a Deep Valley Christian school. Floyd Rovera, who farms nearby, towns pesticide restrictions could hinder the site. Hewitt says the $25,000 budget limits site options and the parcel was bought in March from Romilda Barra. a board member notes the denial is legislative and Hewitt may refile with the planning commission.

Two killed in headon Highway 101 crash near Ukiah
A late Friday crash on Highway 101 nine miles north of Ukiah killed Willits man Wayne Bell Wear, 29, and Dennis Williams, 26, of Minneapolis. Three others, all Williams passengers, were injured: Fredrika Williams, 24, Kathleen Samson, 26, both Minneapolis, and Richard Benson, 26, Redwood Valley. Wear died at the scene after speeding north in the southbound lane and colliding with Williams. Services for Wear were held at Anker-Lucier Mortuary in Willits with interment in Willits Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Anna Wear, stepchildren Trent and Pam Speers, brothers and a sister in various states.

An off duty sheriff's deputy credited with saving 7 year old Harry Chavez Jr. at White's Beach Lake Mendocino after the boy nearly drowned. Deputy Mike Hansen 30 directed resuscitation efforts and coordinated aid as onlookers retrieved blankets and called an ambulance. The child was revived and released from Ukiah General Hospital.

Father and child escape mobile home fire in Ukiah
Harvey Elmore lit a small stove inside a 10 by 60 foot trailer at 4601 N State Street between The Forks and Calpella. The front of the trailer burned as Elmore and his three year old fled through the rear door. Both were uninjured. Firemen limited spread to nearby cabins while extinguishing the blaze. Cause under investigation, but started after the stove was ignited and Elmore left the trailer.
