Keene Eyes Possible Rematch for 2nd District Assembly Seat

Barry Keene, Santa Rosa attorney and 1970 near-winner against Assemblyman Frank Belotti, announced a probable rematch for the 2nd District seat from St. Anthony's Point Elk on the Mendocino Coast. He urged a People’s Campaign and vowed a vigorous, issue driven run amid California’s joblessness, high taxes, housing shortages, and education concerns. The luncheon, sponsored by Coast-Democratic Women, highlighted his call for grassroots involvement and avoidance of political moneyed influence.

Hughes Autobiography Claim Faced With Computer Evidence

New York dispatch reports that the Howard Hughes autobiography may be based on a computer printout rather than Hughes interviews. Icy road blamed in death for Redwood Valley man

Walter Jay Lowell Richmond 51 of Redwood Valley died after stepping toward a minor crash scene when a northbound car skidded on icy pavement and plowed into him. Douglas Beck 20 of Woodlake and Ethel Thompson of Eureka were involved. Joy Thompson seven was injured. Richmond, a longtime operating engineer and sheriff air squad member, was pronounced dead at Willits' Howard Memorial Hospital. Funeral set for Wednesday in Ukiah with burial in Ukiah Cemetery. Survived by widow Edythe, two children, siblings, and a grandchild.

Connally says no tax hike this year or next year

Treasury Secretary John B. Connally told the House Ways and Means Committee that the administration sees no need for a tax increase this year or next, provided federal spending stays within the 1973 budget estimate of 246.3 billion dollars. Committee members questioned whether higher taxes might be required given past spending control efforts. Mrs Griffiths suggested candidates may have to promise higher taxes.

A Saturday 11 41 p m fire at Calerio Mill on N State involved burning sawdust under an abandoned saw with no damage. A 3 58 a m smoke check at Robert Kruder trailer park found no fire. A Friday 12 30 p m call to Bob Miller Equipment Rental at 1609 S State addressed a fuel oil spill. units stood by on arrival.

PT&T allocates 1.874 million for Ukiah projects in 1972

Pacific Telephone Manager Ed Bean announced a 1.874 million spending plan for Ukiah area in 1972 covering land building central office equipment telephone sets and allied gear and outside plant facilities. Major items include 50 000 land and building 1 062 000 central office gear 520 000 outside plant and 242 000 for telephone sets. The plan supports Direct Distance Dialing and growth across Ukiah Calpella Hopland Potter Valley and Willits with broader spending in nearby communities and a 123.4 million Northern Counties budget and 888 million statewide.

Ex-GI drugs pusher sentenced after war record plea

Karl Lawrence Hengeveld, a 24 year old Vietnam veteran, was sentenced by Judge Tim O'Brien to three years in state prison for receiving stolen property. He received probation on two other narcotics related counts. His attorney urged consideration of his war service and medals the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
