The forecast calls for cloudy skies in Northwestern California with rain north of Garberville today and north of Ukiah. The pattern persists through Tuesday with damp conditions and continued light rainfall possible in the affected counties.
Rep. Edward P. Boland backs Morris Udall for House Democratic leader in a five man race. Udall says he now has the contest won while rivals Boggs O Hara Sisk and Hays dispute the claim. Boland will vote and place Udall’s name in nomination in a bid to sway undecided members.
Ukiah patrolmen investigate a Friday night hit-and-run on N State Street near Orr Springs Road. Linda Watson 18 and Rodney Wright 21, both of Ukiah, were injured when their car was rear-ended at about 9 30 p m. They were treated at Mendocino Community Hospital. Watson said she had signaled a left turn and saw no vehicle behind. Police seek owner of a reportedly abandoned 1952 Chevrolet Tudor coupe.
Carol Williams, an Empire Gardens housewife, has gathered 500 Ukiah residents' signatures opposing mandatory garbage collection. She argues constitutional rights were violated by the year start franchise agreement. City officials say waste pickup is a community responsibility funded by taxes. Williams plans to reach 1,000 signatures before presenting to council.
The clerk of the board reminds that the public hearing on February 2 at 2 p.m. in Supervisors Chambers will also consider all written protests against the proposed dissolution. Protests must be filed with the clerk before the hearing and include land description for landowners or the voter's residential address.
Officials of the American Bakery Company report the loss of $2,000 worth of money orders and checks from a route salesman's car on Friday. The envelope containing the items was left on the front seat while he entered a Calpella bar, and the report was made to Deputy Walter Willcut.
Norman Larson, 17, Ukiah, the driver, and Lynn Larson, 14, his passenger, escaped with bruises when their car overturned on rain slick Redemeyer Road just north of Deerwood Drive at 9 15 Sunday night. Highway Patrol said Larson slowed on a curve, braked, and the car slid out of control and rolled onto its top. Both were treated for bumps and bruises by their doctor.
Albert Young, 29, of Redwood Valley, was sentenced to 90 days in county jail with credit for time served after conviction on possession of dangerous drugs. Deputy John Stephenson arrested him and he was booked to serve the remainder of the sentence. In Wichita Falls Texas police say 15 year old Charles Carpenter hanging suicide linked to his father preferring to watch the Super Bowl over taking him hunting.
Morgan Guaranty Trust Co reduced its big business loan prime rate to 6 percent, joining First National City Bank of New York and Chemical Bank of New York in a nationwide cut driven by easing credit conditions. The White House welcomed the move hoping mortgage lending would benefit, while Patman notes the rate had fallen from a high of 8.5 percent last year.
Geology students from Los Angeles Harbor College discover fossil remains along a San Pedro hillside three miles inland. The specimen, urged by experts, is believed to be a 30,000-year-old gray whale stranded during the Ice Age on a lagoon habitat inland from the ocean.
Sen. Alfred H. Long was named to lead a Senate Democratic committee to find legislative candidates for 1972. Sen. Mervyn M. Dymally announced the group with Vice Chairman Sen. George N. Zenovich and members Sen. Randolph Collier Sen. Joseph M. Kenrick Sen. George Moscone. The team aims to counter Republican Cal-Plan and broaden party campaigns across California.
Robert E. Archibald forester and district planner for the Ukiah BLM office earned a special achievement award for outstanding services. District Manager John F. Lanz praised his work compiling URA and MFP materials for Cow Mountain and his overall district planning competence. The Archibald family lives in Ukiah.
Fort Bragg police report counterfeit currency passing in the area. Bogus $20 bills from 1963 series with serials 0390460C and 39590212C and $10 bills from 1950 B series with serial 89321569A were used, with the Treasury Department investigating and no details released.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. for Minnie E. Wellington who died Saturday at 66. A Boonville resident, she is survived by three children Betty Minton James Wellington and Jackie Wellington a sister Sally Huffaker and six grandchildren. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Charles Rossetti 46 of Hopland was arrested for drunk driving on U.S. 101 and booked at the county jail by CHP officer Ray Higbee.
Friends and colleagues of the late Ukiah attorney and former State Senator James E. Busch gathered in Superior Court Dept. 1 to honor his memory. Memorial services were led by Tom Lonergan and bar members Newell Rawles Hal Brunner and Merle Orchard. Judges Lilburn Gibson Wayne Burke and A B Broaddus attended as dignitaries. Busch died December 13 after a five year battle with cancer. CHP arrest report notes William F Graves 29 Calpella was arrested on drunk driving charges near Calpella and booked at county jail.
