Ford’s 1978 Budget Proposal Triggers Democratic Firestorm

President Ford pitched a 440 billion dollar fiscal 1978 budget with defense and social program cuts, tax cuts, and a 7 percent defense spending rise. First murder trials open in Mendocino County history

In Mendocino County two Superior Court panels began murder trials for Michael Doc Stanley and Raymond Sperber. Stanley is charged with fatally shooting Michael Esslinger on July 3 near Albion Ridge Road. Sperber faces murder charges for Jane Ann Short found dead May 1 near James Creek.

FBI arrests student on espionage charge

FBI arrests 23 year old UC Riverside student Christopher Boyce on espionage charges for attempting to sell rocket construction secrets to the Soviet Union. Boyce, a former TRW security clerk, faces possible death if convicted. an accomplice in Mexico City is also held. A second arrest was described as a distinct possibility by FBI officials.

First Utah execution in a decade Gary Gilmore is put to death

Gary Gilmore was executed at Utah State Prison by firing squad after dawn, the first U.S. execution in about ten years. The 36 year old killed motel owner Bennie Bushnell during a Provo holdup and admitted another slaying the previous night. A five-man squad fired 30 rounds, ending a long legal fight as federal and high court stays were lifted.

Clausen introduces highways bill aiding Redwood Empire

Congressman Don Clausen unveils legislation to boost federal primary highway funding by 2 billion dollars annually from 1978 to 1990.
