Armed Forces Pay Hike Planned by Administration

Washington reports the administration will send Congress a 508 million dollar bill to raise military pay. The plan follows a Cordiner committee recommendation and aims to reward proficiency and merit, add two pay grades, widen differentials, and set uniform starting pay. The rollout targets July 1 and seeks to end the longevity system.

Willits Planning Commission Hears Church Permit Request

Willits January 14 The Planning Commission will hold a hearing on a proposed Latter day Saints church near Howard hospital and consider use permit applications by Charles Miller and Pete Persicio for East Oak Street. The site is zoned residential only and has seen truck repairs before. The meeting starts at 8 p.m. in the city council chambers.

Rep Barratt O Hara proposes a five cent postage stamp showing two pirates for out of town letters while he favors a three cent stamp. The idea was discussed in Washington as part of President Eisenhower's postage plan.

Scouts Plan Dinner in Santa Rosa

Space Age Pinch Not Felt in Water Projects

Despite cuts in water and flood programs in the 1959 budget President Eisenhower keeps two major projects intact. Coyote Valley Dam requests total 2.45 million dollars and Middle Creek receives 600 thousand. 750 thousand is available from 1958 funds for the Upper Lake area project. Quiet Willits Council Evening Yields Small Decisions

Willits council took three notable actions including deleting army reserve space at WIC hall with a 60 day cancellation to March 9 and transferring Willits unit activities to Ukiah. A civil defense area join resolution and deputy coordinator Gene Garlopp were approved. The Main and Commercial traffic light repair was authorized after Police Chief Olan Greenwood requested it.

Dairymen Meet in Eureka January One District Session

The American Dairy Association of California will hold its annual district one meeting January 21 at Spruce Point Grange hall three miles south of Eureka. Session begins 10 15 a.m. with a noon dairy lunch. Reports from officers and personnel cover progress finances and plans for next year. Discussions include advertising coverage June Dairy Month and district plans for California Dairy Princess contest. Election of several directors on the board is also on the agenda. Members urged attendance by other dairymen and interested parties.

Treasury seeks temporary five billion debt limit increase

Secretary Robert B. Anderson asked Congress for a five billion dollar rise in the public debt limit from 275 billion to 280 billion, to run until June 30 1959. The move follows Eisenhower’s budget push and projections of a near 500 million dollar deficit in the current fiscal year, with hopes of revenue growth and a 500 million dollar surplus in 1959.

Blood Bank Mobile Unit Visits Ukiah Sunday Morning

The Sonoma County Blood Bank will park at the Veterans Memorial Building on Seminary Avenue in Ukiah from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. Local service groups sponsor the drive including Soroptimist Club Lions Firemen's Auxiliary Rebekahs Emblem Club Camp Fire Girls and the Rotary. Camp Fire girls assist Soroptimists and Sea Scouts join to run a loudspeaker car with Kiwanis support. Donors are urged to help replenish local funds.

Willits Man Faces Rape Charge After Bar Meeting

John W. Luberger, 45, a junk dealer from Willits, is jailed in Mendocino County on rape charges. He allegedly assaulted a woman Saturday night after she accepted a ride from a Willits bar, threatening violence when she resisted. the victim is described as an estranged married woman.
