President Eisenhower's space age budget bans new water resource projects for the next fiscal year to help pay for missiles. Existing commitments will still receive funds, with a 52 million dollar increase for 1959 as new appropriations for the Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation show decreases from the current year. Construction on units already started should continue as economically as possible in flood control navigation irrigation water supply and power.
A Republican candidate for the First Congressional district will be chosen at a meeting on Sunday January 26 in Ukiah announced by Elmer S Worland screening committee chair. After a four hour session four candidates spoke John J Lynon Fred Dupuis John Ward and Oscar Larson while several others considered entry and some influential figures indicated patience before committing.
In El Centro California an abandoned rifle range nicknamed Little Cape Canaveral becomes a rocket test center for local enthusiasts. Five youths launched a 6 ft 4 in solid fuel rocket reaching about 4000 ft in 30 seconds, then crashed three quarters of a mile from the site. A second group earlier hit an estimated 15000 ft with a two stage rocket on Dec 31 drawing over 50 spectators.
Firefighters responded to a Monday 8:30 a.m. chimney fire at the Bogner ranch north of Ukiah. No damage was reported.
California Democratic Council endorsed a seven man slate headed by Edmund G. Brown for governor and Clair Engle for U.S. Senate. Other picks include Glenn M. Anderson for lieutenant governor, Stanley Mosk for attorney general, Alan Cranston for controller, Bert A. Betts for treasurer, and Henry Lopez for secretary of state with McCarthy opting to run without CDC support.
President Eisenhower sent a space age budget to Congress proposing 73.9 billion dollars for fiscal 1959.
