Pollution hearing board meeting targets GP Tepee burner issues

Mendocino County pollution hearing board, in its first session, granted variances to 16 lumber firms for tepee burner start up times while Georgia-Pacific faced strict action. GP received a 90 day variance for five noncompliant burners and a late April extension for a sixth as it shifts to Boise Cascade plant materials. If noncompliance continues, GP faces fines up to 500 dollars per day, potentially 6,000 dollars.

City election filing date corrected for Ukiah

Ukiah City Clerk Hattie Tillotson announced a correction for the filing deadline in the April 11 municipal election. Nomination papers must be filed before noon on February 3 for city council, treasurer, and city clerk races, replacing the previously stated February 17 deadline. Incumbents include Don Scotto Sterling Norgard Jack Simpson Ruby Orr and Mrs Tillotson. Papers are available at city hall and must be returned by February 3 before noon.

Willits ASB president airs views on student rights

Willits High School student body president Butch Canepa III urged the Willits Unified School District to adopt a policy on students rights and responsibilities under SB 890. Principals from Willits and Laytonville presented the issue to student councils for discussion. The policy, modeled by the state association of school boards, is slated for adoption at the January 26 meeting. Trustee Joe Geiger urged proactive student leadership to prevent problems. Harold Engstrom said trustees must act under the law.

Nixon to withdraw 70000 more troops from Vietnam
