Orville Warren Kellen 83 a longtime local pioneer died yesterday at 2 30 PM after a heart attack while visiting a woodcutter on Vichy Springs road. A retired mechanic who ran one of Ukiah’s first garages he once searched for gold in Alaska with his father. Survivors include his wife Frankie Kellen and sister Eugenia Schaeffer. Funeral services set for Wednesday at 2 PM under Masonic Lodge F and A M 146.
Boonville native Leon Eldred Lawson aged 85 died at his home Friday January 6 He was a son of early Anderson valley settlers and lived near his birthplace his entire life Funeral services were held at the Boonville Baptist Church with Rev Harry Williams Interment was in Boonville Evergreen Cemetery He is survived by one grandson Ivan Lawson two great grandsons and six brothers Will Lawson Charles Lawson D P Lawson Jesse Lawson Ollie Lawson and Mercer Lawson
The Plaza Theatre Company bought land at Mill and Oak streets from B. E. Shakey Johnson for 4500 dollars to add parking for their South State street theatre. The deal was handled by Preston Falk Johnson. A year earlier Plaza bought 21 acres on the north highway from Romolo Cinquini via Lee Wilson Realty, planned as an open air theatre.
Ukiah Lions club forms committees led by general chairman Allan Auger for the annual polio drive and dance. Key roles include polio fund drive chairman Bob Hough and dance chairman Bill Shields with extensive crew for hall decoration, program, police supervision, publicity, tickets, and coin card distribution among local bars.
Everett Cox resigns as manager of the Pacific Fruit Exchange Ukiah unit effective December 1 to focus on two Ukiah valley ranches. He served nearly 30 years at Ukiah plant. The Cox family traveled to Hawaii and California events including Honolulu Christmas visit and Pasadena Rose Parade. Cox recently recovered from influenza.
