Couple held in death of infant in Fort Bragg
A Fort Bragg mother Juanita Casey 23 and her companion William Tash 21 are jailed on child beating charges in the death of 11 month old Matthew Patrick Elms. Bail set at 2500. The coroner cites old and new bruises and acute pneumonia as the cause. The twins and a sister were placed in foster care.

Ukiah Man Hits Cop During Booking Arrest
Roger W Nolan, 27, Ukiah, arrested for drunken driving after a 5:13 am Saturday stop on N State near the Fairgrounds. While in booking he struck Officer Perry, injuring him slightly, and was charged with battery on a peace officer in addition to DUI. Four other Ukiah residents also cited for DUI over the weekend: Fred Borges, Jacqueline Willits, Albert Bakken, and Stephen Kersely.

California Senate Overrides Reagan Veto on Noise Standards
California lawmakers returned to the Capitol as the Senate voted 27 to 10 to overturn Gov. Ronald Reagan's veto of a noise insulation standards bill. Beilenson's measure would set minimum noise insulation standards for new homes hotels motels apartments and other dwellings. The Senate also reversed a veto on a statewide solid waste program, but the Assembly did not override. The session resumes amid long-term fiscal and educational debates and plans for a potential adjournment by June 30 1972.

Nixon supporters push to enter Nixon in New Hampshire primary
Nixon supporters filed 2000-signature petitions at Concord statehouse to place him on the March 7 New Hampshire ballot as he signaled a decision on reelection. Sen Vance Hartke announced entry in the Democratic primary and Rep John Ashbrook began filing to challenge Nixon in the GOP race. Muskie prepared a presidential declaration and Kennedy weighed but ruled out blocking Jackson. Mayors Rizzo, White, and Ayrshire’s Jody Smith took office as 19yearold youngest mayor. Hartke urged hard action against Nixon failures.

Final New Year traffic toll near NSC estimate
A final United Press International count reports 456 people died in traffic during the 78 hour New Year weekend, near the NSC estimate of 400 to 500. California led with 59 deaths, followed by Texas 33 and Florida 31, with Alaska Delaware New Hampshire and DC reporting no traffic deaths. CHP notes safe weekend but 1971 closed with 24 fatal crashes and 30 deaths from Laytonville to Sonoma. One injury report and several noninjury incidents rounded out the period.
