Car Forced Off Road Injures Passenger in Highway 1 Crash
A Manchester woman was injured when a pickup driven by Alvin W. Titus was forced off Highway 1 by an unknown motorist, rolling down a 50 foot embankment. Lillian Titus, a passenger, was taken to Point Arena Medical Center for treatment. Vehicle damage was moderate. investigation continues.

Eastern Airlines Resumes Service After 38 Day Strike
Eastern Airlines ends a 38 day strike that idled 16 000 workers and grounded the carrier. Service returns with a nonstop New York flight at 9 a m and 31 other Eastern flights on the first day. Daily flights will rise to full service within about 10 days. The walkout by IAM and the Flight Engineers union ended with a new contract for the engineers. New Year's Death Toll Reaches 136
United Press International reports the New Year holiday traffic toll rose to at least 136 dead by 5:30 a.m. with 192 total deaths for the holiday period. Bad weather across the northern states contributed to the spike, per the National Safety Council, as California led state counts with 14 fatalities and New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan also posting double digits.

A 3 year old, Dennis Edward Vaness, drowned in a Willits family pool while relatives watched a football game on TV. He was found unconscious about 4 pm and died at Howard hospital. The body was taken to Anker Mortuaries pending funeral arrangements.

Potter Man Seriously Injured in Creek Accident
Donald Nelson twenty two son of the Wright Nelson family of Potter Valley is in Ukiah General Hospital with serious injuries after his Chevrolet sedan left the Teast vaudge north of Highway 20 and landed upright in a creek ten feet below highway level around 10 pm Wednesday. Patrolman Jack Mason covered the accident for the CHP and the matter is under further investigation. Nelson is an employee of Welch and Welch lumber mill at Ridgewood.

Lake County Boy Drowns Shock during goose retrieval
Arthur Montmirquet a 16 year old from Middletown drowned Wednesday at Dieter Lake reservoir four miles south of Middletown while trying to recover a dead goose. His boat capsized as he reached for the bird.

Judge Grants Barr Hospital Use Pending Case
Superior Court Judge Lilburn Gibson granted a preliminary injunction allowing Dr. Robert M. Barr to continue using Hillside hospital facilities to treat patients until the case is heard on its merits. A second order sustained the hospital's demurrer to Barr's complaint, saying no clear allegation of Barr's right to practice at the privately owned hospital existed, but he was given 10 days to amend. The judge noted the record includes five days of testimony and substantial documentary evidence, some favorable to Barr.

Ukiah Youth Causes Busy New Year for Sonoma Officers
Officer Leslie Ryan of the Ukiah police returned a 15 year old boy to Sonoma County deputies after a New Year incident. The youth, pursued for cabin break ins on the Dukes ranch near Fulton, admitted stealing a car in Ukiah and fleeing. He boarded a bus to Santa Rosa then walked to Fulton and forced entry into cabins. He slept in one cabin before fleeing when the owner alerted the sheriff.

Washington UPI reports Air Force sources say Berlin is surrounded by Soviet radar and radio jamming gear. The jamming could disrupt any future airlift to break the blockade, and even with countermeasures airlift alone may not suffice. Cargo needs could exceed 2.5 times previous levels. Following Too Close Leads to Nighttime Rear End Crash
