Aides to Senator Fined for First Class Scandinavia Trip

Two aides to Senator Randolph Collier must refund 1300 to the state for using first class on a two week Scandinavia study trip. They billed 5093 for travel and 2653 2440 in hotel expenses. The first class billing exceeded coach fares by about 650.

Scotto for Mendocino County sheriff in 1974 race

Washington UPI reports the US Office of Education will keep administering a race relations questionnaire to students in about 25 states and DC despite New York City officials and parents calling it racist. About 27 000 students have taken part. three NYC districts balked.

Fewer die as holiday traffic slows

The New Year holiday travel saw fewer deaths as traffic conditions were lighter than expected. National Safety Council guidance priced potential fatalities at 470 to 570 for the period, but restrained driving and gas concerns kept many off the roads. At least 212 traffic deaths were tallied by noon EST since Friday, with smaller totals in fire and other categories. A Chicago case involved McBride's Shell Service Station charged for selling illicit items. Authorities noted many gas stations shut Sunday and planned limited reopenings through Tuesday.

Ukiah Band comes close to victory at East West pageant

Ukiah High School marching band earned 90 points, near the top in a pageant at Candlestick Park San Francisco. Highlands of Sacramento won Division A while Santa Cruz led Division B with top scores. Band director Rowland Nielson praised the Frosh-Soph-Junior group for their musicianship and effort, despite placing second.
