Storm n California telephones hit by supply caravan

Reported manager says million mark reached as costs of phones still out of service. Sunday night a caravan of 30 telephone trucks loaded with cable and equipment and 52 men was stopped 112 miles north of Laytonville near Bell Springs road while attempting to reach Garberville. Four wheel drive trucks carried medicing supplies.

Holiday Traffic Toll During Christmas Holiday

United Press International reports close to 600 people died in traffic over a 78 hour Christmas holiday period. total fatalities 592 with 92 in traffic 41 fires 18 planes 66 miscellaneous. California led with 61 deaths followed by New York 40 Texas 39 Michigan 36 Pennsylvania 34 Illinois 29 Ohio 26. Six states had no fatalities Alaska Hawaii Idaho Maine Montana Washington. Officials said the toll might have been higher but the rate eased after the first 24 hours. National Safety Council warned 550 to 650 deaths could be expected.
