Hope entertains Vietnam troops during Christmas show

Bob Hope brought a two and a half hour Christmas road show to a 15,000-strong Vietnam crowd at a 25th Infantry Division camp near Saigon. The performance featured 83 troupe members, including Neil Armstrong, with Adm. John S. McCain and Lt. Gen. J. Ewell among the VIPs. Hope quipped about Paris peace talks and joked about a GI’s painted peace symbol as Armstrong described Open Arms aid to deserters.

Lakeport man held on driving charge

Ray Earl Montgomery 22 of Lakeport was arrested yesterday at Mendocino State Hospital by Deputy Sheriff Harold Crice on Lake County warrant charging driving with a suspended license. Montgomery was booked in county jail with bail set at 320 dollars.

Bethlehem Christmas Under Tight Israeli Watch

Christmas in Bethlehem will be observed under heavy Israeli police and army guard with roadblocks perimeters and CCTV to deter Arab guerrilla threats. Mine detectors search approaches the Wise Men route while open air TV screens show the nativity events in Manger Square to reach crowds.

Degree honors for local KC Knights at St Marys

Members of the St. Marys of the Angels KC Council received first and second degree honors at a recent meeting. John Schafer led initiation with Fr Louis Persano and Richard Paz assisting. Recipients of both degrees were Frank Nann Joe Frawley and John Beauchaine. Second degree honorees included Fr Dave Henderson Larry Elford Doug Barrett John Giovannetti Frank Bastoni Charles Green Ludwig Alessi Monte Hill Dr Jose Villarica and Frank Nunes. Also present was Santa Rosa Council grand Knight F Pedroncelli. Fellowship followed.

Laytonville burglaries target three sites in area

Deputy Carl Kyle of Laytonville investigates three recent burglaries in the Laytonville area. Two businesses, Ken's Sport Shop and Gastineau's Shell station, were broken into, and an attempt was made to break into a third. The Redwood Empire Club sustained the largest loss at $1,000. Damage across all sites affected doors windows and cash boxes or registers.

Music lovers can hear Handel's Messiah rebroadcast from the Mendocino County Messiah chorus on December 7 at 6 on Spanish Mountain Channel 12. The Seventh day Adventist Church hall hosts the event. playback is audio only with no video.

Shoplifting Suspects Arrested in Ukiah Center

Ukiah police arrested two suspects in separate shoplifting cases from Yokayo Shopping Center stores. At 3:15 p.m. Angela Laviletta, 57, of Ukiah, was taken into custody by citizen’s arrest after allegedly taking cigarettes and other items from a grocery and nearby store. she was cited and released. A second arrest occurred at 5:58 p.m. when a 15-year-old girl from Philo was detained at Rascoe's Store for attempting to steal tennis shoes. she was released to her parents.

Ethel Marlatt rites Friday

Funeral services for 85 year old Ethel Marlatt of Fresno will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Eversole Mortuary. Marlatt, born in New Jersey, lived in Ukiah for over 50 years before moving to Fresno in 1957. Survivors include a daughter Mrs Wayne Freund of Fresno, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Burial will be in Ukiah Cemetery.

Jet slams Miramar hangar in fatal crash at base

A Navy F8 Crusader jet lost oil pressure during approach at Miramar Naval Air Station and smashed into a repair hangar, killing 11 men and injuring 14. The jet ploughed through hangar doors at 225 mph, causing massive damage estimated at $25 million. Navy Lt Cyrus M Riddell of San Diego ejected safely half a mile from the hangar. Emergency crews battled explosions and fires as workers and aircraft were swept by the blast.
