Night fishing curbs rejected by state fish and game panel

The State Fish and Game Commission rejected the proposal to open night fishing for striped bass in the San Francisco Bay area. DFG Director Ray Arnett argued surplus stocks could support nocturnal fishing without harming future runs. Witnesses claimed as much as 50 percent of the striped bass run could be taken, noting larger average sizes since 24 inches years ago. Regulational confusion across waters and streams was highlighted, urging simplified rules for anglers. Mystery flare in night sky over Ukiah baffles police

Ukiah police hunt a nighttime flare shooter after a resident reported a flare at 2 37 a m landing in a neighbor s yard. Officer Richard Boyman investigated as the city recalls a similar incident months earlier with a gunshot heard before the flare.

James Shawgo Receives Consecutive State Prison Terms

James Shawgo 21 of Ukiah was sentenced to state prison with all four counts running consecutively after pleading guilty to kidnapping rape forcible rape robbery and felonious assault. His two companions were also convicted and sent to prison. The 18 year old victim was assaulted on the Boonville Ukiah Road while traveling from work to her home.

Stolen Checks Case Arrest in Ukiah Area

William Kenneth Fletcher aged 27 of Ukiah was arrested by Deputy Marvin Chapman on Friday on charges of forgery and burglary. He is accused of stealing and forging checks from a Willits construction company office. Fletcher faces three forgery counts and one burglary count.

Night trouble in Calpella ends in arrests

John D. Antone, 21, of Point Arena, was detained at a Calpella bar by Deputy Sheriff James Gettings on disturbing the peace and resisting arrest. At the same location Mary Bell Shearer, 58, Burlingame, was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. In London, Neil Arthur Capendale, 24, received an eight month suspended sentence after admitting to stealing 2239 dollars from his employer where he managed the canteen at a police station.

Two drivers injured in separate mishaps on Friday

Two separate accidents at 6 p.m. Friday injured drivers on Eel River Road near VanArsdale and on Highway 101 near Ukiah. Robert Anderson, 18, Potter Valley, lost control eastbound on Belver Road and sideswiped Pevail Adams, 71, Potter, with both vehicles sustaining damage. Adams was not injured while Anderson was hospitalized along with minor injuries to others. A second crash involved Edith Underhill, 56, Ukiah, and Shirley Gardner, 22, Cloverdale, after Gardner’s U turn led to a broadside collision near Mendocino Community Hospital where Underhill had possible moderate injuries and was treated. Patrol reports note two drunk drivers arrested locally over the weekend, Albert Laukkari, 45, Ukiah, and Ronald Elmore, 31, Brentwood, Calif., both jailed pending court actions.

Tame Geese Slaughter Reported at Potter Valley Property

Potter Valley rancher Ken Stroh told the sheriff that unknown person trespassed on his posted private property and shot two tame geese valued at $10. Deputy Harold Crice investigated the incident.

Man Arrested at Hospital After Drunk in Public Charge

Robert P. Neimeyer, 31, formerly a patient at Mendocino State Hospital, was arrested Saturday night at Mendocino Community Hospital on charges of being drunk in public and possessing dangerous drugs and marijuana. City officers Max Anglin and Frank Stafford responded to a nurse’s report that the suspect appeared drunken or ill.

Car Crash Near Wilson's Furniture Injures Ukiah Men

CHP reports an unknown occupant(s) fled a 1956 Chrysler impounded at Calpella after a 12:55 a m wreck near Wilson's Furniture on N State Street. Robert Keys 26 Ukiah drove north as he turned into the store entrance, broadside striking the southbound Chrysler carrying Tommy Holmes 26 and Lester Ingels 32. Holmes and Ingels were taken to Ukiah General Hospital with minor injuries. The fleeing occupants of the southbound car departed the scene.

McCoy and Langenderfer Births Reported in Ukiah

A daughter was born on December 16 to Mr and Mrs George McCoy of 263 Arlington Drive Ukiah at Ukiah General hospital. A son was born on December 18 to Mr and Mrs Roy Langenderfer of 1740 South State Street Ukiah at Mendocino Community hospital.
