Ukiah residents shine in Journal Home Decoration Contest

Three Girl Scouts and three Boy Scouts judged the Daily Journal Home Decoration Contest touring Ukiah on Tuesday night. First prize 25 dollars awarded to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis for a Santa Claus and Nativity display. Second prize 15 dollars went to Mr. and Mrs. Clifton L. Brown for a Santa at the North Pole scene. Third prize awarded to AG Tos piden Migesta nte Toye dad for rooftop Santa and reindeer display.

Montgomery officials will hear a proposal next week to ban animals and fowl from city limits drawing protest from owners of monkeys horses quail sheep and rabbits though hog owners have not objected to a ban against hogs.

Telephone Chain Planned to Curb Bad Checks

The Cham ber of Commerce Retail Division adopts a telephone chain to curb bad checks. About 60 members in 15 minutes are notified via phone when a bad check is reported. Police inform the Chamber, which warns roughly ten stores, triggering a further five-store alert. Jack Baskerville leads use for meetings and local events.

Dry Creek Dam Project Authorized

The U S Army Engineers recommend building a 277 000 acre foot dam called Warm Springs Dam and Lake Sonoma in Sonoma County for flood control water supply and recreation. The project costs 42 400 000 with 14 320 000 repayable by local interests and includes 2000 acres for a game management area. It aims to reduce floods on Dry Creek and the Russian River and to provide 90 000 acre feet of water annually through 2005. Public review will go to the Board of Engineers for Rivers and Harbors in Washington with written comments invited.

Robbery and Burglary Sentences For Hoagiin and Hanson

David Hansen and George Hoag lin were each sentenced to one year in the county jail after appearing before Superior Court Judge Wayne Burke. They faced theft and burglary charges for entering Brownie’s Market on December 3 and for unlawfully taking a car owned by Donald L. Tracy on the same date.

Brazilian Admits Setting Fire That Killed 307

Brazilian arsonist Adilson Alves confessed to starting the Ni teroi circus fire blamed for 307 deaths. Six Month Sentence for Manslaughter

Hazel N. Mitchell of Laytonville received six months in county jail after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of 84 year old Samuel Henry Wages. Wages, cared for by Mitchell, was pulled from his bed allegedly causing a broken hip and left on the floor all night. He died after being taken to a local hospital in a semi conscious state.
