Memorial gift plan supports cancer programs in Mendocino

The Memorial program chairman of the American Cancer Society Mendocino Lake Unit says year end gifts honor a loved one and fund research, education, and patient services. Young Potter Valley Driver Injured In Crash On Main Street

Wanda Cummins, 19, of Potter Valley, sustained minor injuries and was treated at Ukiah General Hospital Saturday night after her car collided with a left turning vehicle driven by Raymond Cain, 19, of Lakeview, Oregon, on Main Street near the Russian River. Cain was uninjured and about 30 feet of fence was damaged.

Boy Arrested for Suspected Marijuana Possession

Lake County deputies arrested a 15 year old Santa Rosa boy for suspected marijuana possession at the Highway 53 and Highway 20 intersection. He was later released to his parents.

Ditches off coast Pilot pulled from aircraft

Captain Donald Henderson 25 rescued from a ditched cargo plane 22 miles off California after engine trouble. Staff Sgt. Michael Fish 25 pulled him through a shattered cockpit window as rescue teams, eight ships and two helicopters, aided the operation. Co-pilot Jim Breitenstine and Staff Sgt. Richard Jackson escaped to a life raft unhurt.

Seven Marines die in Yokota helicopter crash

Seven U.S. Marines died when a CH46 helicopter based at Atsugi Naval Air Facility crashed during a landing at Yokota Air Base. Five crewmen and passengers were unnamed pending next of kin notification. Witnesses reported an explosion as the craft hovered about 100 feet high before it burned and fell.

Car crashes into power pole injuring three in Ukiah

Three people injured early Sunday when a car driven by William Britton 24 of Ukiah lost control on N State near the Hensley Creek bridge and struck a power pole. Driver Lynn Crabtree 20 and James Jackson 10, both of Ukiah, were taken to Mendocino Community Hospital. The report notes prior valor by a local veteran with a separate Air Force cross cited.

Crash victim still confined by injuries

FT. BRAGG George A Cruttenden 19 of Mendocino remained in serious condition at Redwood Coast hospital after a head on collision on Highway 1 a mile north of Mendocino Thursday night. He struck a parked car with no lights. Randy Jamison 16 Caspar had run out of gas and parked on the shoulder. Della Cruttenden 43 mother also injured. Both vehicles totaled.

State board adopts 1972 tax legislative program

The State Board of Equalization in Sacramento approved a 9 point property tax and a 7 point business tax program for 1972. Property measures include a statewide property tax for school support and an increased homeowner exemption, lien date changes, and expanded welfare exemptions. Business tax items call for banks under sales tax, removing certain tax deductions, equalizing highway fuel taxes, and other technical fixes.

Tipsy drivers give officers busy weekend

Four drunk driving arrests were made by Ukiah police and sheriff's deputies over the past weekend. Fred J. Tickenoff, 48, Loyalton, was arrested at State and Norton streets. Norman L. Keltner, 39, Ukiah, was stopped at Gibson and State streets and booked. Kenneth W. Fries, 60, Ukiah, was arrested at State and Perkins streets. Donald E. Merrell, 37, Redwood Valley, remained in county jail following arrest on drunk driving charges on N. State Street. Sheriff’s deputies also made an arrest on N State Street early this morning.
