Seven South Moluccan gunmen surrendered at the Indonesian consulate in Amsterdam after a 15 day occupation, freeing 25 hostages. The group, who had shouted war cries, lowered the flag and yielded to police amid government talks promising nonconcessions and possible dialogue with Moluccan leaders. Two others were killed during related incidents. four gunmen were 23 and three 22.

County planners deny rezoning near Ukiah and Willits
The county planning commission denied Fred Vallette s request to rezone acres along Redemeyer Road near Ukiah from single family and residential estate to agricultural and conservation. They adopted parts of the Ukiah General Plan excluding several areas and approved a Pine Mountain Estates rezoning while denying mobile homes on 17 parcels. Volunteers Needed to Aid Ukiah Christmas Effort
The 24th annual Community Christmas effort seeks volunteers to sort and pack food clothing and toys for economically disadvantaged families in the Ukiah Valley. Work starts today at 4 p.m. at Pomolita Junior High and continues 8 a.m. Saturday through Tuesday with boxes delivered December 24 by Ukiah Jaycees Redwood Empire Lions and Mendocino County 4 wheel drive patrol.
