East West faults in Transverse Ranges threaten LA area
USGS and Caltech researchers report in Science Magazine that a system of east west trending faults along the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountain fronts could pose an earthquake threat to the Los Angeles metropolitan region. The zone runs from Point Mugu through Santa Monica Hollywood Los Angeles Glendale Pasadena Monrovia Glendora to Cajon Pass north of San Bernardino and may be as dangerous as the San Andreas fault. The team notes the crustal stresses forming the transverse ranges over 12 million years remain active and could still produce damaging quakes despite not matching the San Andreas in size.

A Liberian freighter with about 40 crew sank 500 miles west of Vancouver after losing power in a storm. Two lifeboats and a liferaft were seen, but number of survivors unknown. Rescue hindered by 68 mph winds and 30-foot seas as Japanese and Russian ships aided. The 15,000-ton Oriental Monarch had sailed from Portland bound for Japan with wheat, owned by Island Navigation Corp of Taiwan.

Crash injures two girls in Fort Bragg area accident
A 9:20 p.m. Tuesday crash on Sherwood Road near Main Street left two 18 year old Fort Bragg girls Linda Dow and Diane DePugh with possible major injuries after their car ran off the road and struck a tree. They were taken to Fort Bragg Hospital. A separate, delayed report noted Manuel Pimentel 25 of Manteca injured when his car failed to negotiate a curve on Highway 20 two miles east of James Creek, rolling down a nearly 100 foot embankment and sending him to Mendocino Coast Hospital.
