Management team to run facility at Mendocino hospital

County supervisors unanimously accepted staff recommendations to keep Mendocino Community Hospital open indefinitely and hire a multi hospital management firm to operate it. The study urged continued operation, service expansion, and cost reforms while budgeting for capital improvements and possible MediCal/MediCare claim reimbursements.

Laird Leaves Nixon Administration for Reader's Digest Role

President Nixon accepted Melvin R. Laird's resignation effective February 1 with personal regret. Laird, ex defense secretary, will join Reader's Digest as senior counselor for national and international affairs. He will stay an extra month to help with the State of the Union and the new budget, and urged congressional action on impeachment by March 15 if warranted.

Kuwait cabinet weighs fate of Palestinian hijackers

Kuwait's cabinet held a three hour emergency session to decide whether to try the five Palestinian guerrillas who hijacked a Lufthansa jet and sparked 33 deaths in Rome and Athens. A spokesman said decisions on extradition or trial were not yet made as the investigation continues.

Nixon given power to ration gasoline

Washington UPI report says House and Senate conferees grant President Nixon unlimited authority to impose gasoline rationing without congressional approval. The deal also allows other energy conservation orders until June 30 with veto power by Congress, then limits future actions to specific legislation unless gasoline rationing remains. Negotiators work through energy bill provisions amid talks on windfall profits, desegregation bus rules, and environmental clauses.

Lake sheriff won’t seek reelection in 1974 primary

LAKEPORT Ed Anderson a Lake County sheriff for 16 years announced he would not run again in the June 1974 primary. He was appointed, elected and twice reelected and plans extensive travel with his wife Mary. He will stay active in volunteer community services.

Coast building option okayed for Fort Bragg site

County supervisors approved a six month option on a former convalescent hospital owned by Bank of America in Fort Bragg. The plan to centralize county departments hinges on a zone change from Fort Bragg, with tax payments prorated to credit the purchase if approved. Open space plan final say rests with board in 1973

County supervisors last Wednesday approved a modified open space conservation element tied to the general plan. The plan need only be reviewed by the planning commission before returning to the board, with no mandatory public hearing. If the commission fails to act within 40 days, approval is implied. The board holds final decision, and a special planning commission meeting was unable to take action due to lack of quorum. Ukiah City Council considers trap club relocation progress

Tonight after 8 p.m. at city hall the council reviews progress toward a new site for the Ukiah Valley Trap Club and Ukiah Rifle and Pistol Club as residents protest renewal across the river from Regina Heights. A bi weekly pay plan for city employees is also on the agenda along with bids for Anton Stadium fencing and an executive session.
