Energy crisis could mean more jobless in California

California's unemployment rate may rise to 6.5 percent next year due to the energy crisis, warned State Finance Director Vérne Orr. He told the Assembly Ways and Means Committee that current unemployment is 5.1 percent, while a legislative manpower panel estimates 7.3 percent next year. Orr also said current-year state revenues will be about 137.4 million dollars lower than expected because of the energy shortage, with bank and corporate taxes down about 50 million.
