Farmers Picket Packing Plants Across Plains States

United Press International reports strikers shut York Packing Plant in Clay Center Kansas and picketed in Oklahoma City Kansas and the Texas Panhandle. Agriculture Secretary Bob Bergland planned a 6 p.m. EST conference call with Farm Belt governors to discuss solutions while Bergland returned from Georgia. Bread and milk shortages appeared in Abilene Kansas as five supermarkets were picketed and delivery workers reportedly honored the lines.

Carter and Begin Meet Over Israel Peace Proposals

President Carter and Israeli Prime Minister Menahem Begin held a two hour meeting in Washington to discuss Israel's new Middle East peace proposals including resolving the Palestinian Arab issue. Begin may offer to relinquish partially Israeli control of captured lands though neither leader commented.

Deputy nets 15 year old robbery suspect in San Jose

Deputy Steve Satterwhite on patrol nabbed a 15 year old from San Jose after the youth robbed a teacher named Carol Smith on Wednesday, stealing her purse with $18 and car keys to a Datsun 280 Z. The youth was booked at juvenile hall for robbery and vehicle theft.

Northwestern California Rain Tonight Through Saturday

Periods of rain in the north with heavy bursts tonight and Saturday, and rain likely in the south tonight and Saturday. Increasing southerly winds are expected tonight. Fort Bragg expected 52 rising to 50, Ukiah 49 rising to 57.

Bodily harm factor seals life terms for Chowchilla kidnap trio

Alameda County Superior Court ruled three wealthy San Francisco Peninsula men must spend life without parole after pleading guilty to kidnapping with bodily injury. Judge Leo Deegan found the victims suffered nosebleeds and fainting during the 16 hour abduction of 26 schoolchildren and their bus driver at a Livermore quarry. The case stems from the July 15 1976 Chowchilla bus kidnapping and ransom attempt.

Hurt home rebuilt for defense testimony

Fire investigation expert William Hull testified for the defense in the Otis Hurt arson trial describing remnants from the 1976 fire and arguing evidence supports accidental causes. The judge overruled objections about evidence handling as Hull detailed burn patterns and electrical code violations. Court resumes at 10:30 a.m. with Hull expected to continue today.

County PC approves Eden Valley plan

The county planning commission voted 4 to 0 to approve a 55 lot 5500 acre Eden Valley subdivision 15 miles northeast of Willits. The plan by Robert Harrah trimmed four 320 acre lots and sought road abandonment. Supervisors will review. protests over erosion of farmland and costs were aired by local residents.

Victim of coast crash identified in Fort Bragg

The coroner identified 21 year old John Allen Wesley Jr. of Fort Bragg as the passenger who died when a station wagon driven by Debbi Ann Lacey plunged from Ocean View Drive into the ocean. Lacey survived with broken leg and bruises.

More Rain Expected Across Northern California This Weekend

Forecasters warn the Pacific storm gate opens again bringing more rain and snow to Northern California. Ukiah logged 1.32 inches in 24 hours ending 8 am, total season 13.80 inches, as a new storm from east of Hawaii heads for the coast arriving tonight or Saturday morning per NWS chief meteorologist Arthur A. Gustafson.
