Boy Scout Saves Two Scuba Divers Off Fort Ross

An 11-year-old Tiburon Scout, David Smith, is credited with saving divers Bob Roney and Tom Witte during a November abalone expedition off Salt Point State Park. He pulled them from dangerous surf, gave first aid, summoned help, and then treated them for shock, earning high medal recognition.

James K. Jones rites Friday at Fort Bragg

Funeral services for former Ukiah resident James K. Jones, 71, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Cannarr Fairlee Funeral Home in Fort Bragg. Burial follows in Fort Bragg Cemetery. Jones died Tuesday in a Santa Rosa hospital. He is survived by two sisters, Ruby Squires of Little Rock and Margaret Wilcox of Ukiah, a brother, Jack Jones of Los Angeles, and two nephews, Claude and William Phillips.

Cafeteria Expansion Enables Double Session School Day

Officials outlined optional sixth period enrollment and double session logistics. Parents were urged to contact Tully or Musser if sixth period cannot be secured. Bus routes will adjust with lighter loads, more trips, and state-funded costs. The Main building and art annex will be closed with offices and library moved to the cafeteria.

PUC reopen hearings on $143 million Pacific Telephone rate rise

San Francisco UPI The California Public Utilities Commission will reopen hearings on a $143 million rate increase for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co. following a California Supreme Court ruling. The court found improper accounting in calculating the rate hike and the PUC denied refunds petitions while stating refunds would not be issued immediately. The commission will examine lawful alternatives to how Pacific Telephone taxed expenses.

Frazier says trial was lotta laughs

In Redwood City a tape played at John Linley Frazier's penalty trial shows him telling jail visitors his trial was a pamesque joke and that he has had a lotta laughs. The 25 year old killer, already convicted and ruled sane in the murders of Dr Victor Ohta and four others, discussed revolutionary activity in prison.
