Ukiah Endures Cold Snap With Record Lows

Ukiah faced record low temperatures 13 degrees on Saturday the coldest since 1949, with 17 degrees Friday and 19 Sunday. The deep freeze caused widespread damage from frozen pipes to sprinkler activations, triggering over 50 public service calls and several fires, while readings across the county dropped to near or below zero in several locales.

Cycle crash kills woman near Hopland on Highway 175

A 42 year old Hopland woman, Billie Jane Ratliff, was fatally injured when her motorcycle turned broadside into a slow moving car driven by Mike Langley on Highway 175 near Old Hopland. Ratliff died after transfer to Santa Rosa Community Hospital. Funeral arrangements pending.

Canyon site may reveal lunar secrets on Apollo 17 moon

Apollo 17 commanders Eugene Cernan and geologist Jack Schmitt touched down in a lunar canyon to study the moon s origin and evolution while Ronald Evans mapped from the command ship America. The crew reported spectacular views of Camelot Sherlock and the Great Cross as they prepared for descent and began the busy exploration of the moon s ancient history with new infrared findings reported from orbit.

Wreckage found west of Ukiah in search for missing plane

A Civil Air Patrol sighting led sheriff's officers to a crashed 1946 Stinson Voyager eight miles west of Ukiah near Low Gap Road. The pilot, Truman Dewitt of Pittsburg, Calif., was returning from Little River to Chico. No life signs observed. recovery teams inch toward the gully site as planes comb the area. The incident follows a weeklong air search after the Tuesday night takeoff from Little River airport. The pilot was to be married this weekend.

Ban lifted on coast construction by Mendocino couple

A temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction blocking the single family home project on the Mendocino coast were dissolved, allowing the construction to proceed. The case involved local residents opposing the project and a court ruling lifting the halt.

Jug Handle project freed from restraining order

Superior Judge A B Broaddus dissolved the restraining order on the 200 unit Jug Handle Creek motel project after AB 889 contended the developer had invested enough to qualify for an exemption from an environmental impact report. The Morgan Lovett case over erosion adjacent to the Landles home proceeded with testimony from Lovett, Negtegall, and UC geologist Boudreau, who warned of ongoing slippage due to fault lines and soil.
