World’s first space astronomical observatory begins study
The Orbiting Astronomical Observatory 2, a $75 million NASA project launched from Cape Kennedy, started ultraviolet observations from Beta Carina in the southern sky. Wisconsin seven-telescope unit and Smithsonian four-telescope set aim to map stars, with a six month sky survey planned for over 50 000 stars. The program follows a prior failed OAO launch due to power loss.
