In a City League doubleheader Anton’s teams defeated Masonite 64 48 with Avalanes star 24 points and 12 free throws. Anton’s then swept Crawford 79 58 as Lowery Ruby injured quarter fatigue and star shooting led Tappen Hert Harry Whitaker Whitaker Smythe Redding Preston Bowman all reaching double digits for the winners.
Rome officials say there will be no price increase for 1960 Olympic seats with ranges from 48 cents to 9.60 dollars matching the 1952 Helsinki pricing.
Ukiah plays Fort Bragg basketball in Hentiig Invitational tourney action. If Ukiah wins tonight it faces Galileo or Analy tomorrow, with finals possible Monday. Starters include Russ Brown, David Maxwell, Tom Lawrence and Rich Hutchison. Don Behneke to see action after injury.
Ukiah star Tom Whitaker earns honorable mention on the 1949 AP Little All American football team. At Nevada he played four seasons and this year made 18 receptions for 285 yards in seven games, while handling defense and punting duties. He also drew Shrine All-Star consideration and discussed pro terms with Los Angeles Rams after being drafted by the Rams and Chargers.
Sugar Ray Robinson plans a return to the ring after 20 months away. He will fight a non title ten round match against Bob Young of Providence at Boston Garden Monday night. Robinson, 37, says he is in much better condition than when he won the title from Carmen Basilio on March 25, 1958, and asserts he has strong plans for future bouts.
Robinson explains illness and fever that nearly canceled a title fight and recalls signing a slip to avoid blame. He recounts Sugar Ray recapturing the crown over Basilio on a fatigued night and explains delays seeking big-money bouts with Basilio or Archie Moore. He also anticipates a bout with Gene Fullmer if he defeats Pender.
The Ukiah area hosts a distance running meet starting 1 am with a handicap race on a rugged two mile to marathon course from Richard Sones Ranch to Lake Mendocino and back. Ken Rowley Ron Locatelli face steeper handicaps as others gain advantage. Expected runners include Ken Anderson Ken Rowley Wendell Seablom Lou Ruddick Rich Flores Stan Stafford and Doug Slaven.
Johnny Parsons announces he will quit auto racing at year end while still billed as champ. The 41 year old plans to finish his career in the December 27 midget race at Saugus Stadium, a U S Auto Club sponsored event, after 20 years on national tracks and 11 Indianapolis 500 starts.
Stirling Moss, the British driver famed for lap records, posted the day's best Sebring 5.2 mile circuit time at 3 minutes 101 miles an hour during practice. The Grand Prix, last of nine 1959 events toward the world title, could crown Moss with a win as he competes with Jack Brabham and Tony Brooks for top points.
Between 1939 and 1945 the number of civilian workers employed by the Federal government rose from one million to three and a half million.
The Masonite golf tournament starts Sunday with finals and week from Sunday December 20. Parings posted at Ukiah Municipal Golf Club where about 40 golfers entered and entries still open until tee time Sunday morning. Ukiah Golf Club also announces new board of directors Larry Wildburger Stan Milholland Jack Wegesser and Bill Rice replacing Ralph Cole Clark Ruell Stickney and Ward Briggs for one year terms.
Ukiah fans are urged to visit Iceland skating rink at Ward and Milvia in Berkeley for a Sunday and Tuesday night ice hockey clash. League leaders meet with players holding collegiate to professional experience. Admission is only a dollar. Games run weekly through March.
Italy plans to fund the 1960 Olympic Games with about 40 million dollars from weekly soccer pools. The Italian Olympic committee will receive 15 percent from each pool coupon sale.
San Francisco coach Red Hickey laments a blocking and passing slump as the 49ers prepare for the Green Bay Packers. Frank Morze will be replaced by Karl Rubke, and Joe Perry may sit with a pulled muscle. C. R. Roberts moves into the backfield.
Doug Mohns from Capreol Ontario scored twice as the Boston Bruins ended a five game winless stretch with a 6-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the lone NHL game on the schedule.
