Two men William Henry Watson and Claud Jay Fisher were sentenced last week for a November 8 Ukiah Motel burglary and a following break in at an adjoining cabin. Superior Judge Hale McCowen denied probation. one man had prior felony for armed crime. They were jailed after arrests in Ukiah.

A felony warrant for 41 year old Thomas G. Sherman has been issued to Chief George Smith for grand theft involving a pickup stolen from Paul Poulos of Potter Valley and burglary of Garcia Trucking in Anderson valley. The incidents occurred about a week before the November 4 car theft.
Vatican officials report Pope Pius XII shows improvement and will close the Marian Year with a bedside broadcast from St. Mary Major Basilica. He will recite an Ave Maria and issue an apostolic benediction to city and world, beamed worldwide including across the Iron Curtain. The ceremony caps a year of Marian devotion among 425 million Catholics.
Miranda woman Zoie Wallen dies from injuries after a collision five miles north of Willits on the Redwood Highway. Funeral services will be held at River Side Chapel in Garberville Wednesday at 2 p.m. Interment at Garberville. Driver M F Tripp of Willits was turning into a mill when Wallen’s car hit the lumber truck. Wallen’s granddaughter Lawna Hansen, age 4, was also injured with a broken right thigh.
An Arkansas man, John Miller of El Dorado, writes County Clerk Jim Broaddus asking for official aid to locate his father Harry David Miller and grandmother Lilly G. Meyers, both Pennsylvania Dutch, last known in Medford Oregon. He plans to contact California county clerks to check voter registrations and assessor books and hopes tips come from Mendocino or Lake counties.
United States and its Korea allies back a UN resolution condemning Red China for jailing captured American prisoners as spies. U S Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge met with diplomats from 135 UN fighting nations in New York. State Sen John F McCarthy of Marin County urged toll cuts on the Golden Gate Bridge from 40 to 25 cents and lower commute fares.
State Senator-elect James Busch spoke at a Cloverdale meeting of supervisors and citizens from Cloverdale and Geyserville urging Highway 101 realignment and widening for the 32 mile Cloverdale to Santa Rosa link. Preston Ayshire and the Marin Napa Sonoma district highway engineer attended to inform residents and foster consensus on routing the highway.
Thousands greet Santa in Ukiah as he lands by helicopter at East Standley and Main, with E. E. Safford, Claude Falconer, Mayor Leonard Nix, and Fire Chief Al Bechtol in the welcoming party. Balloons rise as 4000 candy canes are handed to children. Christmas tree lights atop the courthouse glow in the first official city lighting.
Operations resumed on the Northwestern Pacific Railroad after a 25 day strike ending yesterday afternoon. Fourteen hundred employees are returning to their shifts as quickly as possible. First freight through Ukiah since November 11 left Willits around 9 a.m. today.
Weekend thefts include three full length coats stolen from a parked car in front of Merk's Radio Store on North State street. A blanket and men's boots vanished from another car near Best Ever Cafe. Police noted the incidents occurred after 3 am Sunday. Also reported were a purse theft, an ivory handled steak knife set worth 30 dollars, and a 6.95 electric clock from local premises.
Three Lakeport freshmen aged 14 planned a Sunday duck hunting trip on Clear Lake. A misfired .22 rifle killed Paul Kalfsbeek instantly, with Dickie Jones and Dennis Russell present. Dickie and Dennis reported the accident to authorities. Coroner Kinleyside released the body to Jones Mortuary. Paul leaves a mother and father and a 15 year old brother, plus two Ukiah aunts.
California Supreme Court ruled that a pedestrian must exercise due care when crossing a street even in a marked cross walk. The decision in Ernest Shoemake v Wilsey and Wilsey of Ukiah stemmed from a 1952 trial over negligent driving at the State and Perkins Streets intersection where the jury found Shoemake negligent.
The United Nations and the United States press China to release U S airmen held a year and a half after the Korean truce. Canadian Lt Col A R Mackenzie, freed from China, reports three additional airmen held with 11 charged with spy crimes. The Steering Committee may raise the cases to the General Assembly for debate.
