On a Wednesday afternoon the board of supervisors approved buying 24 deputy sheriff stars for 372 dollars on the recommendation of Sheriff-elect Reno Bartolomie. Bartolomie outlined a plan to drop two part time hires and raise salaries for deputies in the office. he takes office January 3.
Pete Clark dies at his daughter Ernestine Clark's Ukiah home on December 2. Funeral from Zimmerman Mortuary on Saturday December 4 at 2 p.m. Elder C L Williams of the Seventh day Adventist church will read the service. Interment in Covelo Cemetery.
Merle P Orchard deputy district attorney and future district attorney attend the second annual Institute for Prosecuting Attorneys at U C Berkeley Boalt Hall. Deputy DA Frank S Petersen joins as attendees as Attorney General Edmund Brown calls all district attorneys to a three day program focusing on law enforcement and administration of justice. Mrs Orchard and the children accompany the future DA to Berkeley.
A woman prisoner was taken to the California Institute for Women at Corona by Sheriff B. G. Broaddus with Mrs. Broaddus as matron. Hazel G. Wilkinson pleaded guilty to second degree burglary and was sentenced by Superior Judge Hale McCowen. Mrs Wilkinson, 41, her son Stanley, 23, and Ernest E. Haapala, 41, pled guilty to burglary near Albion Ridge in August and September and were sentenced to state prison, the men to San Quentin. They are from a Siskiyou county family.
Funeral services for Harry E. Brittingham, noted Potter Valley resident, who died November 30, will be conducted in Zimmerman's Mortuary chapel at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 5. Robert C. Groves will read the service, with music to follow at the Chapel of the Chimes in Santa Rosa.
Ruel Stickney Mendocino county Farm Bureau state delegate will review accomplishments of the California Farm Bureau at the Red Wood Valley Farm Center tonight.
Ukiah plans to have a state health department engineer survey three potential sanitary fill sites. City Engineer Douglas Cruickshank will request the survey, with sites including the Johnson property south of Ukiah on Highway 101, the Williams property on Vichy Springs road, and the Schamber property near Calpella. Northwestern Pacific Railroad embargoes all freight shipments from Ukiah as PMT trucking fills the gap with round trips to Santa Rosa and Lake County. The strike by locomotive engineers stretches into its fourth week, idling about 1400 workers, with no settlement in sight. Trucks from California and Oregon flood the Redwood Empire, serving lumber mills and manufacturers, while California roads post job and truck rental signs. Santa Claus arrives at 6 30 tonight at the city parking lot Main and Smith streets.
Mrs Zoie Wallan of Marinda Humboldt County is severely injured after a rear end collision on Oil Well hill five miles north of Willits. The accident involved a lumber truck driven by M F Tripp and occurred Thursday afternoon. Wallan’s granddaughter Launa Hamson is hospitalized with a broken leg while Mr Wallan and two other children were lightly hurt. No citation issued as police investigate.
Fred Clemons longtime Ukiah resident active in Masonic circles has been elected worthy patron of Valley Home Chapter No 182 Order of the Eastern Star at Windsor. He will be installed next Wednesday evening at 8 o clock.

Cooler tonight. Southerly winds 10-20 mph near the coast north of Monterey, increasing Saturday. lighter winds below Monterey. Fort Bragg area shows variable clouds, few showers, then rain Saturday afternoon, with little temperature change.
Washington officials say the US Formosa defense treaty will force Red China to be more cautious about threats to the Nationalist island. The pact commits the United States to defend Formosa against Communist capture, with possible action against the Chinese mainland if Formosa is attacked. Senate approval is expected early next year.
