Apollo 17 astronauts prepare for a scheduled takeoff at Cape Kennedy as authorities report a spectacular launch night. UPI notes astronauts Eugene Cernan Ronald Harrison and Jack Schn caught in the bustle while other spaceport chatter includes scattered reports from Tokyo and Yosemite amid mist and quake rumors.
Volunteers and teens joined adults in a Channel 13 Telethon that lasted nearly 26 hours raising close to $4,000 in pledges and donations. Local realtors made unusual bids while John Maudlin and Letha O Laughlin swapped secretary roles for charity.

The Moores and Associates Irish Beach environmental impact statement will be reviewed by the county planning commission Thursday at 9 a.m. in the courthouse board room.
