Navy under congressional pressure over Avondale ship claims

Four Louisiana Democrats led by Hebert Boggs Ellender and Long pressured the Navy to settle unsubstantiated Avondale Shipyards claims totaling 73.5 million dollars. A private Navy report and internal surveys show the service resisted, with Navy officials and contract watchdog Gordon Rule blocking the payout. Excerpts to come in a future column.

Youth in Action honors Covelo's Lois Hurt at Asilomar

Lois Hurt of Covelo launched Youth in Action four years ago with Farm Bureau support to recognize youth in fair participation. Mishaps keep CHP busy in Ukiah weekend

Inoculations Announced For Venezuelan Equine Sleeping Sickness

S.M. Brody, federal livestock inspector, announces free serum to inoculate horses mules and donkeys in Mendocino and Lake Counties. Clinics will be held at Covelo Willits and other points with dates to be announced. Owners urged to contact veterinarians for appointments and to keep vaccinated stock on ranches for 14 days.

Health Dept Clinic Schedule This Week in Ukiah

The Ukiah health department lists a single clinic this week a family planning clinic Thursday 5 to 7 pm by appointment call 4624731 ext 331 or 281. The well baby clinic is the second Friday Sept 10 at Veterans building S Oak and Seminary. The tuberculin skin test clinic is the third Friday Sept 17 from 1 to 5 pm at the health dept.

Three Suspects Arrested in Philo Market Burglary

Melvin Curtis Gilbert 25 of Green Creek Arizona Loren Eugene Bloyd 23 of Philo and James Edward Engle 23 a transient were booked on burglary charges after being arrested in Boonville. They allegedly broke a window to enter the Philo Market and face arraignment this morning.
