Gemini 5 maneuvers cut orbit point in rendezvous test

Astronauts Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad execute a maneuvering rocket burn on Gemini 5 to lower the orbit high point by 12 miles in an eight day flight test. They reported success and proceeded to the 33rd orbit southeast of the United States with all systems go.

Mental Health Fly-Ins Schedule to Mendocino Hospital

Dr. James Lowry announces two public official events bringing 11 northern California counties to Mendocino State Hospital. Gov. Brown’s Grizzly TI will fly guests to Ukiah, with a hospital bus meeting them. The agenda includes tours, an aftercare briefing, a luncheon, and a question period with staff and patients.

Weisfield’s Jewelry Theft and Local Incidents Report

Weekend police activity in Ukiah included a possible theft of over $2,000 in Weisfield’s jewelry after a window break in. Earlier, Schuler’s Surplus Sales had a break in with rifles and pistols taken. A gasoline-doused kitten was burned by three juveniles, and a minor in a jury accident was noted.

Two Youths Injured In Hit-Run Bike Car Crash Near Ukiah

Two youths were injured after a motorcycle was struck from behind on N State Street near Parducci Lane by a car driven by James D Keys 23 of Redwood Valley. Dean McConnell 15 Clearlake Oaks and passenger Joe Pugh 17 Ukiah were hospitalized. Keys said he saw the taillight but could not stop. A second weekend crash on Highway 101 near Sonoma County left Burton Harlan 35 Kelseyville and Roger Duncan 12 uninjured aside from cuts and bruises after their car went off a 50 foot embankment. they were taken to Cloverdale Medical Center.

Unitarian minister ambushed in Jackson Mississippi

Rev. Douglas A. Thomson, 59, a civil rights advocate and Mississippi Council of Human Relations secretary, was shot 12 times after giving a Jackson church member a ride home. Police report a white gunman fired from a green car, with threats against Thomson noted in recent months.

Six Juvenile Escapees Reported Apprehended

Probation officers pursuing six boys who fled from Juvenile hall last week overpowered a matron and stole her car. Police say three were found in Merced County and three in Tulare County. the stolen car was recovered in Tulare. The youths were taken into custody Saturday, per Teletype information received.

A Saturday dispatch shows a non damaging car fire near Western Hills Trailer Court at 12 20 pm and a false alarm on Clara and Mason Streets at 9 33 pm no injuries reported and units returned to service.

U S Jets Hit Targets Near Red China in Viet Nam

U S Air Force jets damaged a railroad bridge 30 miles from the Chinese border and struck the Ban Thach hydroelectric complex 80 miles southwest of Hanoi. In total 87 sorties damaged infrastructure and supported attacks near the demarcation line while Navy planes hit a Hanoi area military facility and three bridges.

Shotgunned Priest Still Alive in Civil Rights Incident

In Hayneville Alabama Rev Richard Morrisree 26 of Chicago remained gravely ill after being shot on Friday in a civil rights related incident. Jonathan Daniels 26 an Episcopal seminarian from Keene New Hampshire was killed on the store driveway as he and four Negro companions were nearby. Morrisree's father and two clerical colleagues kept vigil at his bedside in Montgomery as state officials investigated.

Four Days of Fun at Redwood Empire Fair Ends

A total of 26,414 fairgoers attended the Redwood Empire Fair with peak crowds on Saturday. 4-H and FFA members sold steers and lambs in the new livestock pavilion under strict efficiency rules. Mike Butin of Willits 4-H won the steer efficiency trials with an 985 pound Hereford sold for 315.20 to Earl Maize. Sue De Bruyn won fat lamb class with a 101 pound lamb bought by Safeway Ukiah for 32.32. Other results include Peter Bradford of Hopland 4-H second in steer rate of gain and Ray Williamson of Covelo FFA third in steers. Diamond D Ranch Middletown topped Angus bull judging with Black Gestress as top Angus cow. R. F. Cox a Hereford bull was also noted.
