Ukiah Gala Dance Vies With All Night Radio Broadcast

A downtown School Street gala tonight at 8 30 features auctions for gifts and prizes plus a 7 pm to 7 am uninterrupted marathon broadcast on KUKI. Fire Out of Hand at C Williams Ranch Near Vichy Springs

A controlled burn on the C Williams ranch east of Vichy Springs escaped control, scorching about 120 acres of grass and brush. Forestry officials at Willits reported the fire was brought under control at 2 a.m. after twenty five foresters battled the blaze.

District Fair Gate Up Over 1953 Figures as Show Finishes Strong

The Eighth Annual 12th District Agricultural Fair closes its fourth day with a record 8851 paid admissions, 381 more than 1953. F.P. Stipp reports higher income due to a single gate system and a $1 main gate charge for inside shows. Premiums totaled $15,606.7 to 705 exhibitors from 3598 entries, up from 1953. An accident injured Neal M. Bowles, and Paul Bunyan with his Kangaroo Kort drew an unexpected crowd.

Hukill to Serve Jail Term For Sheriff Assault

Dink Kenneth, 25, of Fort Bragg, was sentenced to nine months in county jail for assaulting Deputy Sheriff Tolman last May. He jumped bail, was arrested in Modesto, and returned to Ukiah to begin his sentence. Hukill and three Fort Bragg youths were found guilty of beating Tolman and resisting arrest after a riot at the Track Inn, Boonville, May 15.

Fire destroys boys camp near Fort Bragg

A fire early Sunday morning at the San Francisco Boys Camp at Marwedel 15 miles east of Fort Bragg destroyed a structure housing lighting generators camp supplies and personal belongings valued at 60000. Camp director Ernest Mayer said a bucket brigade formed by campers battled the blaze while the Willits forestry crew arrived at 650 am and found the fire extinguished. Faulty wiring is listed as the cause per H Thomas dispatcher at Willits station.

Firemen Answer 3 Saturday Alarms

Ukiah fire chief Al Bechtel said three grass and brush fires were answered Saturday. Calls came at 11:25 a.m. near the airport south end, 2:22 p.m. at Bogner ranch north of town, and 4:36 p.m. on Highway 20 where nearly 300 acres burned. No damage was reported in any of the blazes.

Board Adopts County Budget of 9 Million Plus Tax Rise

The Board of Supervisors on Friday formally adopted the 1954-55 county budget of 9,532,067.83 dollars with a 3.18 mill tax rate for the current year. The final budget, approved after a public hearing, reflects a 538,018.37 dollar spending increase and a 36 cent tax rate rise from 2.82. Projected funds include 6,019,978.39 non levy, 3,019,978.39 from taxes, 36,420.64 unsecured, and 2,993,557.75 secured rolls, driven by higher road and welfare costs.

Train Wreck in Illinois Kills 4, Injures 53

The Santa Fe Chief steamed from Chicago to Los Angeles derailed east of Lomax Illinois after a broken truck mechanism. Thirteen cars left the tracks and a locomotive and mail car remained on the rails. Rescue teams used torches to free victims while officials reported one of the 37 injured in serious condition and many treated and released.

Airliner Crashes in Iowa Killing Eleven and Wounding Eight

A Braniff DC8 crashed during a landing attempt near Mason City Iowa after hail and a severe storm. Eleven people died and eight were injured as the wreckage spread across two blocks. The stewardess survived, while two women wandered from the scene. Authorities set a temporary morgue in a nearby school gym.

Child Made to Walk Drowns in Canal

In Visalia California a three year old girl Linda Lou Evans drowned in a canal after being ordered to walk from the family car for alleged naughtiness. The mother Mrs William Evans said the child misbehaved all day and was made to walk the remaining distance home.
