Mendocino County Board of Supervisors Meeting Summary

Mendocino County Board of Supervisors met August 10 1971 with all members present chaired by Chim Sawyer. Items included payroll signing approvals, July minutes, tax and DA referrals, and pavement and land relinquishments. Various personnel actions contracts and budget items discussed with adjournment for lunch and a later session noting Fort Bragg dog pound site and Compsche Ukiah road matters. Public notices followed including Ukiah Planning Commission use permit 72-1 for Standard Oil expanded parcel and a land sale notice from the Bureau of Land Management seeking objections to a public park land purchase.

Regional government review at Fort Bragg meeting

North Coast Counties Supervisors Association held a two day session in Fort Bragg on August 12 13 reviewing regional government and the California Council on Criminal Justice program. The panel assessed Senate Bill 920 by Sen Randolph Collier creating a north coast planning and development body and included county leaders and city officials from Mendocino and surrounding areas.

Classification change for Talmage Rd in Mendocino County

Ben Van Zandt of the State Division of Highways told the board of supervisors about deleting Talmage Road from State Street to Mendocino State Hospital from the state highway system. A 22.9 mile portion of State Route 271 from Cummings to the northern county border would also be removed. Don Comstock explained the functional classification concept defining highways as principal arterials and connectors. A public hearing is set for Aug 31 at 7:30 p.m. for residents to voice opinions. No deletion would occur until an equitable maintenance system is approved.

Vets service expands to Boonville area with monthly visits

Mendocino County veterans service office adds Boonville to itinerant offerings. Veterans service director T R O Bayley Jr says Paul Sharp will be in Boonville one Friday each month to aid veterans and dependents, with ongoing monthly trips to Point Arena on the third Thursday and weekly visits to Willits, coordinated at Veterans Memorial buildings.

Levi Emmett Lovell aged 57 of Ukiah was booked at the county jail Tuesday on a bench warrant from Ukiah Justice Court charging him with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Don Scotto Named Fraud Group Director

Donald Scotto special investigator for Mendocino County welfare department has been elected to the nine member board of directors of the newly formed statewide California Welfare Fraud Investigators Association. Scotto will serve a three year term and represent northern California counties on the board. The group aims to improve the integrity of welfare fraud investigators through fast information exchange, mutual aid, training, and communication across county agencies.

Stoen disputes TIA non profit status amid tax questions

Timothy O. Stoen an assistant district attorney submitted an opinion to the board arguing the Television Improvement Association though deemed non profit by state and federal agencies is not under California law a non profit. Barbero urged exemption wording could make it tax free while Scaramella noted loopholes. Meanwhile a carbine theft was reported in Potter Valley with $100 loss. Mendocino welfare chief Scotto highlighted fraud prevention and state welfare director Carleson spoke in San Francisco noting Gov Reagan’s support for the new welfare organization.

Laundromat Owner Complains of Deputy Refusal to Act

Betty Dostal of Mendocino wrote to the board of supervisors alleging a sheriff's deputy dismissed her report of a man throwing garbage at her Mendocino laundromat and pushing her when told to leave. Supervisors sent the complaint to Sheriff Reno Bartolomie for review.

Red Devils Beat Braves In Close Roller Derby Clash

About 1,400 fans packed the Fairgrounds as the Red Devils edged the Braves 42 to 39 in roller derby. The bout featured hard skating and multiple exchanges, with proceeds partly benefiting the Susan Bartolomei fund in Ukiah.
