More than 200 firefighters battled a grass and brush blaze near the Willits city limits that endangered new west side residences on Redwood avenue and Laurel street. Origin unknown but suspect children playing with matches. 100 acres burned near the Willits Fort Bragg road. One firefighter slight injuries from cinders.

McCarthy Censure Hearings: Attorney Rejects Senate Fee
Senator Joseph McCarthy's personal lawyer Edward Williams rejected a $10,000 Senate fee to represent the Wisconsin Republican before a special censure committee, calling it a conflict of interest. Chester, Pa., attorney Wallace Chadwick was named counsel for the six member committee, with hearings set to begin August 30. One charge accuses McCarthy of an unwarranted attack on General George C. Marshall in a June 14, 1951 Senate speech.

Seablom Buys Henry L Stoll Lumber and Stud Mill
The Seablom Salvage Company announces purchase of the Henry L Stoll lumber and stud mill for an undisclosed sum. The deal covers the mill and its three and a half acre property on the east side of the NWP tracks. Plans are undecided whether to dismantle, operate, or sell. Seablom has also acquired a mill in Glen Dale, Oregon and is buying the Maycrest Lumber mill at the Shor ine Highway intersection. Mills are to be shipped to Ukiah for dismantling. The Stoll mill began in May 1948, converting one rail line to a stud mill producing about 60,000 board feet per eight hour shift.

Russian cruiser fires on Dutch coaster in Gulf of Finland
Dutch sea captain Capt HM Piek reports a Soviet cruiser fired several shots toward his 400 ton coastal steamer Dora in the Gulf of Finland. He sent the account by letter to vessel owner S R Eisdow in Delflzijl. The Dora spotted the cruiser Ivan entering the Finnish gulf last Monday.

Services this morning for Armida Ceccarelli were held at 10 o'clock from St Marys Ukiah Catholic Cemetery. Eversole Mortuary in charge. Mrs Ceccarelli a native of Italy age 78 survived by husband John Ceccarelli three sons and three daughters. She came to America in 1906 and Mendocino county 48 years ago. Home at Talmage pallbearers included Bruno Moroni Robert Moroni Joseph Strong Cleve Galli John Patterson Tom Cole.

A two hour closure on the Redwood Highway four miles north of Willits near Oil Well Hill followed a head on collision as Richard J. Scholl, 22, of San Francisco, passing on a blind curve, collided with a southbound lumber truck driven by Rex Scott, 46, of Visalia. Scholl received a citation for passing on a curve.

Lucy Cleland Rites Held in Ukiah
Private funeral services for Lucy Gibson Cleland of Ukiah were held at 10 a.m. from Zimmerman Mortuary with Rev. Simond Aplet officiating. Interment was in the Cleland family plot. Cleland, 85, daughter of the Gibson family, widow of Thomas M. Cleland former chief of police, was a pioneer Ukiah resident and early county social service director. Surviving are grandchildren Thomas and William Cleland of Ukiah and Robert Lewei of Guernewood Park, and siblings Dr L B Gibson of San Diego and Mrs L P Anker of Willits, Mrs B L Cleland, and Mrs F M Roeder of Ukiah.

Complainants accuse Lou Riggs of taking them from Andy's Motel toward Ukiah then north toward Willits at 70 mph. The pickup rolled over five times after a collision three miles north of Andy's Motel.
