Lance says he did nothing improper amid banking inquiry

Federal Budget Director Bert Lance asserted no improper conduct after the comptroller of the currency completes an inquiry into his banking transactions before joining the Carter administration. Findings to be sent to President Carter and released Thursday.

Canal transfer faces strong public opposition says Rep Murphy

Rep. John Murphy accused the Panama Canal transfer of opposing the will of Americans after reporting more than 10 000 letters against the treaty. He questioned executive support and warned the move could place the canal under Panama's military government. County to set 1977-78 tax rate Aug 30

County officials forecast a nine cent drop in the overall tax rate for fiscal year 1977-78. The board will adopt the final rate Aug. 30, following a tentative auditor report showing county general tax from 3.03 to 2.89 and related changes while the library rate stays at 12 cents.

Police deploy about 30 officers to manage the throng while traffic on Elvis Presley Boulevard remains heavy. College board to hear sewer report at Ukiah venue

The Mendocino College board meets tonight at 7 in Fairgrounds Room 501 to hear a sewer plan for Yokayo Ranch. A UVSD tie in may require gravity flow to the main trunkline, or the college could build its own disposal system. Also on the agenda are land purchases, rights of way, and the Mendocino Extension Center.

Carter selects Alabama judge to head the FBI

President Carter names Frank M. Johnson Jr of Alabama as FBI director nominee. Johnson, 58, a Republican and former desegregation judge, must win Senate approval to succeed retiring Director Clarence Kelley. Bell notes Johnson’s pivotal desegregation rulings and ties to former Eisenhower actions.
