Giants battle on as Mota fuels late win and Shamsky ties mark

Mota collects three hits and drives in the decisive run with a seventh inning double and a ninth inning two run homer as Cincinnati edges righty Sammy Ellis. Shamsky ties a major league record by homering in his last four At Bats. Giants sweep Houston 5-3 and 5-2 to gain, while Dodgers rally past Chicago in 14 innings.

Raiders win on late drive without two stars

In San Diego a Raiders comeback beat the Chargers 24 21 in an exhibition as Art Powell and Clemson Daniels sat out. Oakland rallied from a 7 7 tie with a 43 play 60 yard drive ending on a 20 yard pass to Powell for the winning score. Chargers coach Sid Gilman evaluated his defense while Raiders coach John Rauch watched.

Women’s Amateur Final Sets Longest Match Record

Seekonk’s Mrs Carner and Mrs Carter staged the longest match in U S Women's Amateur history, lasting eight hours and 50 minutes. After 41 holes, Carner parred the 41st to defeat Streit’s bogey, with Mrs Vare of Philadelphia having six titles and the 39-hole men’s record set in 1950 by Rosetta over Stranahan.

Dodgers Split Marathon Doubleheader With Cubs

Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs split a marathon doubleheader that lasted eight hours and five minutes. In the opener the Dodgers won 4-3 in 14 innings on Wes Covington’s bases-loaded pinch hit, while the Cubs took the nightcap 12-10 in 10 innings. Dodgers totaled 18 hits in the second game to one more than the Cubs. Drysdale started the first game, went nine innings with nine hits and two runs but earned no decision.
