Giants and Astros Open Series at Candlestick Park Tonight

San Francisco and Houston open a four game set at Candlestick Park as Gaylord Perry faces Mike Cuellar in the first of four meetings. The Giants, two games behind Pittsburgh, hope to rebound after rainouts and a recent skid while the Pirates pace the NL led by Willie Stargell who powered a 12-15 surge with a .323 average and 9 homers. Stargell’s late homer sealed a 7-5 Pirates win over the Mets as New York slipped in the standings. In AL play, Baltimore beat New York 6-5 in 11 innings, while Tony Conigliaro of Boston fueled a 13-3 win over Cleveland with a homer, double and three other hits to raise his average to .278 and his RBI total to 67.
