North coast timber hearing finds crisis overblown

Fort Bragg hosted a select Assembly hearing chaired by Barry Keene to examine claims of excessive logging for export to Japan. Witnesses from Georgia Pacific and Masonite, plus local officials, argued logs and decks remained within normal ranges and warned against overstated job losses, with a full report due after tape transcripts.

Ukiah girl crash victim dies after Highway 20 collision

A 16 year old Ukiah girl Patricia Lorraine Thomas died at Ukiah General Hospital about 90 minutes after a head on crash on Highway 20 west of the Lake County line. She was thrown from a pickup driven by Richard Ford 34 of Ukiah when struck by a second pickup driven by Dane Pennebakker 19 of Yuba City. The Pennebakker vehicle went down a 90 foot embankment. Ford’s vehicle overturned. Ford and 17 year old Barry McKeene were treated and released. Patricia McKeene 38 is in good condition, Pennebakker is in satisfactory condition. She is survived by her parents a brother and two sisters and grandparents. She attended Ukiah High School and was active in Jobs Daughters Bethel 106 and Ukiah Methodist Church. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 pm at Eversole Mortuary. interment at Ukiah Cemetery.

Two Lake County Weekend Vehicle Fatalities

Two people died in separate Lake County accidents Sunday. A 23-year-old Redwood City man died when a steering rod failure caused a head on collision with a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Stanley David Smith. Smith sustained major injuries. A 59-year-old San Francisco man died after a rear end collision on Highway 29 near Spruce Grove Road. Eldon Sousa died at Redbud Hospital. San Francisco residents James Staton Curley and Derle Curley were involved in a separate incident when a Concord driver stopped to assist.

Watergate tapes battle centers on presidential duty to reveal evidence

Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox charged President Nixon with withholding key Watergate evidence. Trap Club protest hearing draws Ukiah crowd at Pomolita

Ukiah residents oppose renewal of the Ukiah Valley Trap Club lease and urge council to deny or heavily modify the lease. A large turnout is expected at a special public hearing in Pomolita gym, featuring testimony from residents and club opponents about noise disruption and possible mitigation measures.

Weekend fires burn 185 acres near Willits and Talmage

Forestry crews fought a large blaze east of Willits burning 130 acres since Sunday afternoon, aided by seven fire bombers and a 70 man ground crew. Another 40 acre brush fire near Talmage was controlled, while a 15 acre roadside grass fire south of Ridgewood Ranch was extinguished. No structures were damaged.

Maudlin Reveals Plans For Ukiah Office Complex

Maudlin Realty announces a 15000 square foot California ranch style office building at 776 S State Street Ukiah. The one acre site fronts State Street with Oak Street rear access and parking for at least fifty. Construction by Empire Development with Kingsley stating half the space is leased and a January completion is planned.
