Ukiah defeated Santa Clara 3 1 in the Western States Colt League opener at Anton Stadium. Ukiah rode pitching by Melvin Cooper and timely hitting led by Danny Nabors and Mike Wolfgram to overcome jitters and five errors by Ukiah, earning a spot in the winner’s bracket as Riverside awaits in the South Regional. Ligonier Pennsylvania Arnold Palmer faced a two stroke penalty after a rail bridge near the first hole impaired his shot at the PGA Championship. Palmer accepted the ruling calmly saying it was his fault for not waiting to have the railing restored. Marshals Span and Powell said no PGA official gave the word. Palmer reached the sixth tee before learning the penalty would not derail his tournament outlook.

Giants Split Doubleheader With Pirates Then Lose Nightcap
