The Enterprise completed a maiden voyage test at Edwards AFB with a 23,000 foot lift off and a controlled, precise approach. Haise piloted the space shuttle through two practice turns toward Rogers Dry Lake runway.
California Assembly voted 54 to 26 to override Gov. Brown's veto and revive capital punishment. The measure, SB155 by Sen. Deukmejian, allows the death penalty for treason and 15 specific murder offenses, with the law taking effect at 5:22 p.m. Thursday.
Assemblyman Barry Keene frames capital punishment as morally inconsistent with a society that condemns killings. He cites historical cruelties and warns against treating people as subhuman to justify executions, urging lawmakers to resist a majority-driven killing impulse. He questions whether justice is served by state murder.
The California Assembly, by a 54 to 26 vote, overrode Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr.'s veto and reinstated the death penalty. Democrats supporting the override numbered 31 with 26 opposed by Democrats, plus 23 Republicans in favor and none against the measure. Not voting: none.
Monday's Mendocino Transit Authority meeting could extend the bus program for one year amid funding needs and potential service curtailments. Ukiah Mayor Jack Simpson and Supervisor John Cimolino support continuing, with talk of a separate MTA board and overlapped TPA structure ending. The session starts at 9 a.m. in Supervisors Chambers.
The Mendocino County Youth Project is transferred from the county supervisors to the office of County Superintendent Lou Delsol. Delsol calls it a manageable shift, with the project funded mainly by federal and state funds and only about one cent of the county tax rate at stake. The budget session also trims a $29 million county budget to address a $678,000 general fund imbalance and a $270,000 revenue-sharing shortfall.
Occasional high clouds persist with scattered thundershowers likely in the northern mountains this afternoon and evening. Coastal areas experience low clouds with stronger sun inland. Fort Bragg highs near 60 and 51 at night, Ukiah climbs to 97 with cooler coastal readings.
