Thieves stole religious objects and jewels valued at $59 million from Oviedo Cathedral. Bishop Diaz Merchant called the bejeweled cross and treasure chest priceless as symbols of the diocese. An official called the haul irreplaceable despite modest material worth.
Fair conditions dominated Northwestern California with low clouds and fog and local coastal drizzle. Fort Bragg will see 51 to 59 and Ukiah 56 to 99 through the period.
The Ukiah planning commission approved a 64 unit low income housing project by Hunt Construction on a 4.5 acre site at Clara and Sidnie north of the Pear Tree Shopping Center after a zone change use permit and architectural review. Orchard Avenue is planned for extension to Clara Avenue with negotiations for funding an assessment district. The project faces resident concerns over noise and traffic but officials cite traffic flow benefits and increased property values. Financing is through the Farmers Home Administration with a 15600 dollar income limit for a four person family.
The Ukiah Daily Journal states the Albertsons advertisement in the Aug 10 issue was incorrect and the proper ad appears in today's issue. Journal management apologizes for the inconvenience to Albertsons customers.
UPI reports the United States and Panama reached a new canal treaty ending US control by 2000 with a Panama holiday declared. Ellsworth Bunker and Sol Linowitz head to Washington as Carter considered joining to announce details. ratification in US Senate expected to face stiff debate.
Washington reports July wholesale prices fell 0.1 percent led by farm and processed foods as raw food costs drop for the second month. Industrial commodities nudged higher by 0.5 percent while overall year over year inflation rose 5.6 percent.
In Sacramento Assembly member Frank Vicencia weighs whether to cast the deciding vote to override Gov Brown’s veto of SB155. Senate leader Deukmejian says the public supports the measure. Vicencia cites constituent pressure and the moral dilemma amid a stalled death-penalty history.
SEIU may withdraw its legal challenge to Mendocino County’s classification plan for a Napa local human services bargaining unit. MCEA seeks 25000 in punitive damages and opposes any SEIU pullback, while the county board had rejected the SEIU petition as invalid.
A House Ethics Committee member states there is sufficient evidence to indict Tongsun Park in the congressional bribery probe. Rep. Bruce Caputo asserts the evidence may be known to the Justice Department, while committee leaders deny reports of staff meetings with Park in London.
