Dodgers edge Padres as Downing fires five hitter
Detroit wins in 10th Downing in gem for the Dodgers UPI Sports The strongest pitching staff in the major leagues may finish the season without a 20-game winner but with the National League pennants flying over Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. It's been years since the majors have seen a staff function so smoothly as the Dodger starting crew consisting of Don Sutton Claude Osteen Tommy John Andy Messersmith and Al Downing. Yet Sutton is the staff's leading winner with 13 victories and would fall a game short of 20 victories at his current pace. It was Downing's turn in the rotation Monday night and the little left-hander responded with a five-hitter that gave the Dodgers a 2-0 victory over the San Diego Padres. The win increased the Dodgers' NL Western Division lead to four games over the Cincinnati Reds who lost to the Houston Astros 5-4. The New York Mets rallied for a 10-3 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals Houston edged Cincinnati 5-4 and the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago Cubs 7-3 in the only other NL games. The Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 the Detroit Tigers nipped the New York Yankees 5-4 in 10 innings and the Cleveland Indians topped the Chicago White Sox 7-3 in American League games. The Dodgers have won four of their last five games during which they have allowed a total of eight runs.
