Air Patrol and CDF guard Mendocino timberlands from fire
Landowners and the California Division of Forestry operate a Cooperative Air Patrol in Mendocino County to detect fires early and dispatch crews. The program, started in 1950 and joined by CDF in 1953, covers 635,512 acres with 21 owners paying per acre assessments. The Cessna 182 flies daily from Ukiah, providing aerial surveillance that accounts for roughly half of fire reports in June through September and guiding ground crews and bombers to keep timber safe.
