Fullerton California UPI reports Rams coach George Allen plans to replace veteran running backs Dick Bass Les Josephson and Tommy Mason with younger players in the opening preseason game against the Raiders. Mason recently returned after nearly a year out with a ruptured Achilles tendon and will be eased back onto the roster.
Coach Brad Shear leads Ukiah Lions through a prep session at Anton Stadium with assistants and a few early drills. The program resumes with pads later. 24 days remain until the Pail Bunyan Day Bowl. The first Redwood Empire Pop Warner game is Sept 7 at College View. home games in the stadium loom on Saturdays with nightly practice until kickoff.
Doris Gilmer leads Ukiah women with a 68 for 18 holes at Brooktrails. Ukiah’s 25-player visiting team wins over Brooktrails Ladies Club with multiple Class A and B winners including Clara Means low-net 44 and Adta McElroy low gross 88.
In Petaluma and Ukiah action packed match races drew crowds as Castelli in a stocker and his super modified clashed with Bob Johnson Bill Deschamps and Bill Dos Sedtanios. Castelli won at Lakeport on Saturday night ahead of a top showing in Ukiah where the stocker field remained hot.
United Press International reports a rough night for the Phillies as they lose their fourth straight, dropping further in the standings. Meanwhile the Braves beat the Expos behind a homer in the sixth and Cepeda doubles, while the Cardinals fall further behind the Cubs.
Sonoma State plans a comprehensive review of its intercollegiate athletic program led by President Ambrose R. Nichols Jr. and Athletic Board chair Howard Rudlett. James Gillett and Associated Students directors will be informed as funding, scope, and potential curtailment are assessed for the 1969-70 academic year.
Bob Porter, pro at the City of Rohnert Park golf course near Santa Rosa, reports Steve Cardoza of Ukiah scored a hole in one Saturday at the Rohnert course. Chet Brown of Petaluma and Tony Kuehn of Santa Rosa played with him. the ace occurred on Sega No. 17. The club notes it is the first since the city bought the course.
