Supervisors approve 99000 for hospital equipment upgrade

The board approved 99000 for leasing and purchase of hospital equipment at Community Hospital Enterprise Fund hearing. A 4-1 vote with John Cimolino opposing set the spending priorities, including a 75000 sprinkler system, portable X ray device and other items while denying seven new positions and several larger items.

Three FB residents killed in Mexico

Six people were found dead in two burned vans 37 miles south of Oaxaca after an alleged drug purchase went wrong. Fort Bragg residents Paul Raymond Smith and Teresa Kellie among the victims with others from Fort Bragg and Mexico. Authorities say the group was lured to buy marijuana and hashish and then ambushed. Smith was stabbed and shot. others were shot before the fires.

Carter signs $1 billion youth jobs bill into law

President Carter signs a law providing 1 billion dollars to create about 200000 jobs for youths aged 16 to 23. The measure funds year round conservation work and youth incentive projects to guarantee employment or training and envisions 400000 possible positions per Labor Department estimates. Jobless rate dips to three year low in July

Unemployment fell to 6.9 percent in July the lowest since the recession began. Employment did not rise and the number of available workers declined 220000 with the drop mainly among teenagers and adult women as officials called it a quirk.

Second arrest in Palace Hotel bar shooting sparks turmoil

Suzanne LeCompte, 38, arrested in the Palace Hotel Black Bart room melee that erupted Tuesday evening. Her husband Charles LeCompte, 53, a Palace Hotel chef, was previously arrested and released on $5,000 bail. The incident involved multiple witnesses, injuries, and gunfire near Smith Street, with the DA signaling further arrests.

Nuclear staff urges Humboldt Bay plant closure over quake risk
